BBC is nothing to do with it, if you watch any other live TV you need one. I dont know, id have thought watching with a slight delay wouldnt cut it when it comes to legalities, plus i doubt those sort of services themselves are legal so would be a tough one to argue the toss with if caught.

I would assume getting caught though these days is harder i dont know.
Right, as it stands. You need a license to watch live broadcasting AND use the BBC tv site in the uk.

You do not need one to own a tv, no matter how much the BBC and Capita pretend you do.

Most tv watched online doesn't even come under the tv license. If ever you read one of Capitas threatening letters, they imply it does, but actually doesn't.

So, watch Netflix/Amazon Prime/ Disney plus to your hearts content.
I watch Netflix at £10 a month and considering they do something the BBC doesn't do now( makes new original content, especially without fear of upsetting snowflakes), is cheaper than a tv license.

As for sport. I can watch virtually all matches from the Prem and big Champs matches from out of the country streaming. It isn't live with a couple of minutes delay, so fails to qualify.

Actually, the BBC has everything to do with it, as THEY RECEIVE ALL THE BLOODY MONEY. It isn't dividied up between them /ITV/C4

    As for getting caught?
Well if you play a straight game, you've nothing to worry about.
However- even so. Remember one thing. The goons banging on your door have NO POWER. They are salesmen, nothing else.

They have no right to enter your property, nor are you under any obligation to answer any questions from them.
The only way they can get a warrent , is by presenting a judge with evidence that you MAY be watching live television.
They only way they can get get, is if you are daft enough to tell them you are/ or let them in your property ect.

The BBC through Capita specialise on terrorisng the old / vulnerable.
They always quote you will get a £1000 fine if caught. Its total bollox. The average fine is less than the tv license,

Lets not forget the old tv detector van lie as well, that's how low level nasty this lot are.

    Facts are, its doomed.
They offer poor quality/quantity tv now. Most programmes are actually repeats.
Last Christmas output was laughable. They are scared to make the classic comedies they used to make/ never get the latest films/ sport is poor at best.

The young don't watch it/ aren't interested. They will never pay for it, so it will go extinct.

Like others have said, it seems a lot of faff, still reckon using the defence that you are using illegal streaming services to circumnavigate not watching live TV isn't a great one, but as you say the fine might not be much so go for it.

Personally still think its dubious as you are watching it while its being broadcast, this fella seems to think so, even says plus 1 is still classed as live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq46sz_IPiE

I watch a fair bit of BBC programming so I am happy with what I pay.

But as you say good chance you won't get caught.

Anyway, that reminds me, i fancy breaking some speed records on the roads around Derby today, i must dig out some old CD's and put them in the windows of my car to prevent Speed Cameras picking me up.

Perhaps it is if attitudes like yours prevail...but, and and I know we’re thankfully all different, I wouldn’t describe programmes such as (off the top of my head) Great Expectations, Happy Valley, Line of Duty, Blue Lights, Luther, Strike, Magpie Murders, This is Going to Hurt, Race Across the World, The Fall, Peaky Blinders, Last Tango in Halifax, all/any of the Attenborough stuff, Spring Watch, MotD, half the 6 Nations...as ‘poor quality’...far from it.

I guess you won’t be able to comment but, imo, that’s a list of quality TV (+ all the radio/news/cricket coverage previously mentioned) all for the princely sum of 44p per day.

What penny pinching tricks can we expect next Terriblytightred?

The facts are? Oh dear you have been watching/reading those right wing fake news media again, who would dearly love not to have a public service broadcaster providing at the very least a modicum of balance in its news and programming. It offers a broad spectrum of programmes, yes there is IMO some duff stuff, but ironically thats often the most popular!

The BBC will have to evolve, sure, but it isn't doomed, far from it. Thankfully the majority of people in this country do not want to consume media which only confirms their existing bias and welcome programmes that inform, entertain and challenge a point of view.

Its a marvellous institution, its a well respected institution across the world and ironically is an example of the UK's "soft power" that increases the UK's standing across the globe. One would have thought the "patriotic UK first brigade" would recognise that but clearly its beyond their comprehension, as is much of the subtlety of global politics!

The majority of people would miss it if it did go, but it won't.

Talking of which...I pay my TV Licence by quarterly direct debit of £41. Today I received a scam insisting that I pay the full amount for my Licence immediately. It’s a particularly stupid one but, to reiterate MA’s warnings elsewhere, there’s a lot of it about. Be careful.

You can understand people being taken in, especially the elderly.

Reminds me of a time my Dad was after a Sat Nav. Me, i just said buy one from argos, this was like 15 years ago so my dad wasnt even that old, would have been 70ish.

But no, hes on the internet looking round to try and save himself some money, eventually tells me hes found one online, saving himself about a tenner.

    Ok fair enough.

Couple of weeks later me and the wife go round and mum and dad sat there looking all nervous and solemn faces. Dad tells me hes been the victim of internet fraud, ive forgotten about the sat nav, got visions of them being thousands out of pocket.

Turns out its to the tune of about £60, so when he buys this 'Sat Nav', does he pay on card? No...bloke hes buying it off emails him telling him where he needs to transfer money and my Dad had toddled off down to the Post Office and transferred him this money.

They didn't seem very impressed when i roared with laughter, tell them £60 is a cheap lesson not to be so ducking stupid (or tight) in future.

On the flip side I had one of those ‘hello mum’ texts a few weeks ago and played the perp for all I was worth over three days and maybe 200 texts, playing the part of a slightly dim not internet savvy old dear and ending, when asked for the twentieth time, for proof of funds transfer, when I sent a gif that would get me a ban from most social media. Strangely the conversation ended from the perps side then too. It earned me the backhanded compliment from my youngest ‘dad, you do fake incompetence nearly as well as you do real incompetence’…

‘Maybe 200 texts’! Didn’t you once suggest you had a life?
    I’m with your ‘youngest’...only I don’t think it’s any sort of ‘compliment’...backhanded or otherwise.
