Can't remember any complaints when Martin Allen broke his contract at Barnet to join us.
Or Billy Dearden leaving Mansfield to join us.

Maybe that's because he didn't have a contract:

"Martin Allen has left Barnet after just 19 days in charge to take the manager's job at Notts County. The 45-year-old was working without a contract at Underhill and has signed a one-year deal at Meadow Lane."

Yeah and he went back to Barnet like 12 times after this so they’ve probably forgiven him.

This. Large Samuel allus was and still is a bit cack-handed, but far worse things happen at sea.

So why did we pay compensation?

The compensation issue wasn't Sam's problem. That's for the clubs to sort out. No idea what was in his contract, but again, if it had holes in it or we couldn't afford decent lawyers to deal with Bolton or the FL then that's on us, not him. Having looked at the timeline and headlines at the time, Pavis would have known it was coming and either didn't offer him an improved contract or made him a lousy one. With Storrie and Scardino "running" the club within a year and Bolton going on to play in Europe, he was fully vindicated. Us standing in his way wouldn't have led to things turning out any better.
