The man is a menace imo. No sense of responsibility. I don’t want to see referees beyond criticism, far from it, and I’ve no idea how good (or bad) Taylor was but Mourinho’s behaviour was completely OTT and I agree...the ego should be landing outside of football for a while.

I'm open to referees becoming more accountable for decisions, even being required to take media questions after a game. However this comes with a huge BUT.

Pay them an appropriate salary to do so, don't get me wrong they are paid well compared with your average salary but not enough for the level of scrutiny they now get. When the likes of mourinho and players get paid more for a few days work than refs get a year then expecting them to be as scrutiniesed and often vilified as they are is wrong.

Refs on something like £40K as a retainer I believe. They then get £1150 a game in the PL, £600 in the SBC. Couldn't find the figures for L1/L2.

For the sake of perspective...isn’t that about one twelfth of what Connor Hourihane gets and about one three hundredth of what Mo Salah receives? Just sayin’!

Let's examine that a moment. A PL ref gets a flat rate plus 1150 a game (say 2 hours). So 575 an hour. According to PFSA the typical championship player earns £ 4,000 a week - approx 100 an hour if we assume a 40 hour week.

So why do you calculate a refs salary for just 2 hrs and a player for 40hrs a week? A full time ref does more than just ref a couple of games a week!

Because the ref is on a retainer of 40k pa for keeping fit (in their own manner) and aware of rules related issues. His appearance money is for just that - ie 2 to 2.5 hours a game. I'm assuming players are required to adhere to a club training regime and required to attend place of work for a minimum numbers of hours a week - I picked 40 hours, if you tell me it's 37 I won't argue the toss.

Doesn't read like a couple of hours work a week
