We can announce the permanent signing of Jack Shepherd from Pontefract Collieries.

The 21-year-old defender joins the Reds from the West Yorkshire outfit and will link up with our U21s setup at Oakwell.

A left-sided centre-half, Shepherd will immediately begin work on the training ground ahead of the 23/24 campaign.

Bobby Hassell, Academy Manager, said: "Jack joined us on trial at the latter stages of last season, hailing from the non-league team Pontefract. He is a late developer, and his potential was brought to my attention early in the season by the recruitment team. We are grateful to Pontefract's manager, Craig Rouse, for being accommodating and allowing Jack to trial with us.

"Additionally, he has displayed promising qualities when it comes to ball possession and has a good selection of passing attributes. Our club has a successful history of developing players from non-league backgrounds, and we hope that Jack will contribute to that trend. We are excited to work with Jack and see how he can further progress within our setup."

"Our club has a successful history of developing players from non league backgrounds"

That is true. However, if you turn the tables, you know, just for a bit of balance, we also have little success signing non league players who become a success at league 1/Championship level which is where this club has been at.

Regarding the Liam Kitching speculation I think it's fair to say quite a few of our players and especially those who did well last season which Liam did are bound to be unsettled .

They see the HC move on , the captain move on , Luke Thomas move on , Bobby Thomas probably not returning , Isted signs for Charlton and the general feeling that things have broken up once again .

Yes I take the point football is a high turnover industry but there's little doubt in my mind that when a number of key people leave it is bound to have a negative impact on the rest of the remaining squad .
The group led by Michael Duff seemed a very tight group , teamwork and working hard for each other was a huge factor in the season .

Kitching and one or two more may think well what's the point in hanging around here , the atmosphere just isn't the same anymore .

There also the not so small matter of Coventry matching the club's valuation of Kitching , I suspect anything just over a million quid and we've seen another one play his last game in a Red shirt .

Last season's back three , goalkeeper and HC gone in a flash .
