He was little - (6’0’’) - compared with today’s keepers...and I doubt he could have performed the ‘sweeper/keeper’ role that has become so popular in the last few years. Great in his day, but I think football has probably changed for keepers more than any other position - along with ‘ball winning’ midfielders - in recent years.
It was over 30 years ago too, but I wouldn't have guessed he played that many times. How tall was Martin Taylor? Always seemed shortish for a keeper.

Shorter I’d guess...and a lot ‘wider’ these days.

This is the old question 'would the good uns from time gone by cope with the modern game?' Obviously, it's unanswerable but imo if you've got it then you've got it whichever generation you belong to. You adapt to the needs of the day using your god given skills and being part of the current regime.
With reference to small keepers Les Green was no goliath but his strengths revolved around his ability to read the developing play. He was also the first goalie I saw who was the first line of attack.

Formations? The translation in this article leaves a lot to be desired but van Gaal and Dutch coaches in general start their formations with a 1

Don't bother replying as it won't get read.
Of course it won't!! But failing to udnerstand the English language, thats a new one, for some reason you flipped, probably not enough Dutch courage.

Well I for one have never seen or heard a coach, pundit, player or indeed anyone in the game use a 1 before a formation, because the goalie is always there, doesn't move his position and therefore its pointless *******s!!

Had a lot of time for him. Genuine guy, bit on the short side but great agility and brave as a lion.

P.S. Still a legend at Wycombe I believe which, bringing us back on topic, isn’t far from Reading.

Was a huge shame when he broke his leg. Used to work with his girlfriend, well she was at the time not sure what their status is now.
