Schar, one of our best and most consistent players

Given the cold shoulder by Switzerland.

    Quote.

Fabian Schar may be away with Switzerland on international duty but the Newcastle United defender is expected to receive limited minutes for his country after showdown talks with manager Murat Yakin.

The Magpies defender has been an ever-present figure for Eddie Howe's battered and bruised side this season but in the Switzerland camp Schar has been told he will be playing second fiddle to Manchester City's Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi of Borussia Monchengladbach.

Schar has regularly been sidelined by the aforementioned pair in recent months but Yakin admits he sat down with the Newcastle star recently to bluntly inform him of his role ahead of the 2024 European Championships.

“It was an intensive exchange, open and honest," the Switzerland boss told a press conference last week. "We haven’t discussed it like that before. He now knows his role.

"Of course he wants to play. We can’t allow ourselves to fall out within the national team. Fabian is now looking forward, let’s see how he accepts his role.

Schar's national team omission will sting and raises concerns over his international position for Euro 2024 this summer. However, it could be a blessing in disguise for Newcastle.

Schar has featured in every Premier League game this term and Eddie Howe will likely have no complaints that a key man is not expected to feature heavily over the International break. At 32, the Swiss star is getting no younger and has played through the pain on more than one occasion this season.

With Sven Botman struggling in recent weeks and Newcastle's defence as a whole leaking goals, having Schar fit and able will be key to the north east outfit finishing the season on a high with a European finish.

Being selfish,I’m not bothered to be honest, he’s getting on a bit now anyway,it doesn’t last forever, all players know it’s gonna happen at some point.

Agreed, and it's good for the club, the less internationals he plays, less chance of being crocked. He's been so dependable this season.

Sad for Fab, they should have at least let him progress to this last tournament. At which point he'd probably decided to retire anyway.

Good for Us. Less matches, fresher legs for the Toon!

Def good for us but I do feel a bit for him.

After a conversation like that, I imagine it won't be long till he retires internationally.
