Cyprus?

I’ve never been but I’m contemplating a visit this year.

Any of you regular visitors as I’d be interested in your opinions?

Been there more times than I care to remember as my parents-in-law owned a villa in Coral Bay, just outside Paphos. Like all holiday destinations it is now far more commercialised than when I regularly visited. There are now also too many Russians living there!

I can only tell you what it used to be like but that is going back thirty years. The last time I visited was about ten years ago. The people are very friendly, the food excellent and very healthy, the beaches are great and the climate is fantastic, if you like the sun. The way of life is very, what I would call casual, in other words, don’t rely on them doing things when they say. They’ll do it, but in their own time. One big advantage is that they drive on the left, as we do, so hiring a car is no problem. It used to be dirt cheap to eat out but like everywhere else, prices have soared. All the historical sites used to have easy access and were free. Most of them are now enclosed and you have to pay.

The majority of my experiences are based around the Paphos area but I think that it’s mostly the same in the whole Greek side of the country. Overall, I would still recommend a visit as I’m sure that I’m looking at the past through rose tinted spectacles.

The wife just wants to make sure the local town is okay and that we are not stuck at the hotel all week if I decide not to drive whilst there.

Really nice hotel as stayed there. Just annoyed how girls could enter the restaurants in smart shorts but they were insistent guys had to wear long trousers.

Lots of Brits there - sadly!

What a coincidence as Peyia is about a five minute ride up the road from our villa in Coral Bay. We often went there as it has good restaurants. I can recommend ‘Cousins’, which is in the centre, and ‘Costos’ which is just off the main drag if you approach from Coral Bay.
Again, it’s more built up than it was but I would imagine the centre, where most of the restaurants are, hasn’t altered that much. As for the beach, as I say, Coral Bay is about five minutes by car. If you do visit, I’ll be interested in your opinion of what it’s like now.

Paphos is great Mick, not sure where your hotel is but the local taxi firms are excellent you can as we did pay for a return journey, for pick up you just call the office, it’s very well run. Paphos itself is a lovely harbour town, best restaurants in my opinion are along the far end of the harbour and many sit out into the water. It is very hot there, also if you are interested in history there are some amazing Roman mosaics just outside the town.
Believe it or not we even did a day trip to Cairo to see the pyramids and the Egyptian museum, that was a long and expensive day, but was worth it.

Thanks for the help and advice lads, we booked the Cap St George’s in Peyia Cyprus yesterday for early September.

**** me though, the prices for a half decent holiday and hotel these days are eye watering since Covid.

I’d agreed to the holiday before I heard the price, I took a couple of deep gulps once she’d pressed the total button!
