    Comments from the Leadership group

The Brazilian returned to the starting XI after injury and grabbed a goal from the penalty spot, but couldn't inspire his side to victory. Afterwards, he took to social media to reveal the feeling inside the club in an emotional message to supporters.

?Delighted to be back almost three weeks after my last injury,? Guimaraes wrote. ?I know, and we all know, our responsibility as players, and that things are not happening the way we would like.

?I believe that in these four years together, this is the first time we are going through a real dip in form. We have to work harder, because difficult moments are always opportunities for us to become better than we have ever been.

?There is still a lot ahead of us, but we are certain that inside our club, no one will let go of anyone, and we will give everything to enjoy better days.

?Special thanks to the club?s physios for getting me back fit in record time, as well as my staff for helping me return to the pitch as quickly as possible. Howay NUFC.?

Guimaraes' comments echoed those from Kieran Trippier in the immediate aftermath of the Brentford defeat. The experienced full-back fronted up to the TV cameras with an honest appraisal of where Newcastle are at.

Trippier told Sky Sports: "It's nothing about the manager. We need to take responsibility for the performances as the players. I'm not going down that route about the manager - I'd never do that."

The consensus in the team is that it's on the players not the manager.

With Eddie's comments kind of lending weight to this.

What more can the manager do when players just seem to switch off at times in matches.

This PL season is gone. Its a matter of hitting 40 points - we arent getting top 6 (personally I felt this even before the Villa defeat).
I would love it if we could get through in the cup, otherwise its Champions League or bust!!!!

Not interested in the slightest in what the players have to say (that's a dig at them, not you, Raga )

They said it before the derby and they've said it on numerous occasions since and we;ve seen the same shite on the pitch.

It's my pet peeve at the minute - that lots of players, including ours and their agents, go on about how they are CL players. . . . well then show it here FFS.

You don't deserve CL if you're not willing to play for it at the club you're at.

Exactly 5th place was very achievable at the start of the season and they made a (unt of it.

Well, maybe they are CL players. Prove it.

Surely it must be obvious to any player with even half a brain that you have to perform for your team.
You have to work your *******s off to get your team into the CL in the first place. Then you can perform on the big stage.

    100% Bill.

It seems ridiculous to even have to say it.

Here we are 2026 and elite level professional football players need to remind themselves that they're supposed to win matches.
