There is no such country as Southern Ireland. It doesn't even make geographic sense to call it this as the most northerly part of the island is in the Republic of Ireland.

Firstly, if it were true, it would be "Ireland (singular) IS an independent country", or at least it (singular) WOULD BE if the whole of it was one country and independent.

Secondly, Ireland is no more of an independent country than Korea.

Both North and South Korea are sovereign states, as is Ireland. Northern Ireland is not independent, it is part of the UK.
