Liverpool & Newcastle must make Szoboszlai decision with release clause due to expire

An article today by Chris Byfield, states that Liverpool face a race against time to sign Dominik Szoboszlai on a reduced fee, according to reports.

The Athletic's David Ornstein claimed Liverpool met with Szoboszlai's representatives this week to discuss a potential summer transfer.

The Reds are keen to bring in midfield recruits this summer upon the expiry of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita's contracts.

And according to Ornstein, Liverpool have begun exploring the possibility of signing Szoboszlai this summer, though there is “an acceptance within the club” that it will be “very difficult to get a deal done”.

It is claimed that the Hungary international has a €70million (£60million) release clause in his RB Leipzig contract.

However, a deal could be further complicated once Szoboszlai’s release clause expires, with reports in Germany claiming that will be after June 30.

Shortly after Ornstein's initial report, Sky Germany journalist Philipp Hinze claimed on Twitter that Szoboszlai’s release clause would no longer be valid after June 30.

"Can confirm the concrete @LFC interest in Dominik Szoboszlai. @TheAthleticFC first," tweeted Hinze.

"@NUFC are also still in. Open future for the Hungarian, whose release clause is €70m. But: The exit option only runs until 30 June!

"After that, the transfer fee is freely negotiable."

Newcastle have also been linked with the 22-year-old, who has attracted interest from the Premier League after impressing for Leipzig over the past two years.

The attacking midfielder, who can also operate on either flank, netted 10 goals and provided 13 assists in 46 appearances for the Bundesliga club last term.

While a transfer will be "difficult" for Liverpool to complete, Szoboszlai has expressed admiration in the past for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking to Hungarian YouTube channel Csisztu in 2020, the Hungary international said (via Liverpool.com): "I really like Klopp. The kind of human being he is. (VOMIT).

"The way he can inspire his players is unbelievable. Even when they have nothing, they can stand up and his players can achieve anything. For me, he is the best manager (in the world)."

Given they have sold Nkunku and Gvardiol has a lot of attention from City, even with a 100m price quoted by Leipzig (they’ll not get quite that) but they’ll be cash rich and not looking to lose any more of their better players.

So if a deal isn’t done for Slozoszbai while his relegation clause is still in effect they’ll either flat out refuse to sell or the price will be massively above 60m

Also his quote about Klopp was 2020… before the emergence of the Mighty Howe and before Liverpool’s ‘less than inspired’ 22/23 season ;-)

Due to the German Bundesliga links is why he's aware of the Klipperty.

Whilst the release clause will expire it's not necessarily a bad thing. The clause had specific purchase requirements - ie - they wanted all or most of the €70m up front.

RB might ask for more then the €70m for him from July but if the player wants to leave then they'll be in a difficult situation. Liverpool don't have a lot of money to spend. They've spend £45m up front for McAlister with the deal rising to £60m. FSG are not gonna spend vastly more this summer after the huge outlay for Nunez last summer & McAlister this.

Regardless, from July 1st clubs can offer a differently structured deal to meet a price that makes RB happy.

Or they'll have an unhappy player on their hands next season.

In saying all this, Ashworth & the team will ensure Howe has the tool box of quality players required to achieve our goals next season.

My Saudi mate Alwaleed is reporting we've walked away from the Szoboszlai deal - it's a rehash from the world class liar Ornstein

    Time will tell

Wonder if the release clause is based on the full amount paid in a lump sum.

If it were, then we’d not be doing that anyway.

Hopefully we’ll see the Tonali deal wrapped up soon and that will put a smile on people’s faces and help us in future signings.

If we were to play Bruno/Tonali and then one of Willock, Joelinton, Longstaff, Anderson next season then that wouldn’t be the end of the world even… so assuming Tonali signs then midfield is probably not even our priority.

Que será, será. Fif**** years of Mike Ashley is to blame where we lost a lot of ground against all other teams in the PL.
If Dan found out he prefers Liverpool then I don’t think he’d hang around.

Why is the ‘t*en’ in 15 not allowed on here? Something to do with Adam Johnston?
