Six libraries, mostly in underprivileged areas of Aberdeen have been confirmed for closure on 31 March.
They talk “progressive”
but are reactionary when it comes to the crunch. All to save the small change of £280k.
It’s been said that there’s nothing that nefarious self-serving politicians fear more than an educated workforce and electorate, so it’s entirely natural that learning and developmental resources at foundation level are blitzed.
The demos I attended, including this morning’s, must be the most polite and inoffensive I’ve ever gone on, but that did not diminish the sense of anger and the feelings of dashed hope as idiots and incompetents dismantle irreplaceable community services.
Sort it oot, Humza, there’s a good lad.

Surprised to see Douglas Lumsden was at it. Some brass baws on himOriginally posted by 57vintage View PostSix libraries, mostly in underprivileged areas of Aberdeen have been confirmed for closure on 31 March.

I worked beside him for three years and not one person told me he was then a Tory councillor. Such is my ignorance of local politics I only found out he was involved in politics not long before he become an MSP.Originally posted by Mason89 View PostSurprised to see Douglas Lumsden was at it. It didn't surprise me he was a Tory, as he held views that would make Farage blush.
I did struggle with how he ever became council leader and even more worryingly an MSP. I doubt he is capable of having a thought of his own, but possibly that trait would make good party fodder.

I do have some sympathy for the council on this, as I know Cornhill, Woodside and Northfield are hardly used.Originally posted by 57vintage View PostSix libraries, mostly in underprivileged areas of Aberdeen have been confirmed for closure on 31 March.

I know that not the point you are making though.
As a weekly library user myself, the opening hours of the branch libraries don't help. I can't really use Northfield, my local one, as at work when they open, but I do use it if I am off. Mastrick or Bucksburn have better book choices and opening hours for me, but I like going to different branches as you always find a gem of a neglected book in them.
I have noticed more people in the Libraries the past few months, which is great and long may it continue.
I hope they win the battle to save some of them, but if they do, people need to use them more. Or the same thing will happen again.

Iain Yuill’s cover has been blown. Liberal Party politics since the 1960s has been community-values based. Even when they coalesced with Cameron from 2010-2015, these values were maintained in local politics. His suggestion that libraries are just buildings, and that people can access library services via their iPads is a 21st century “let them eat cake” (I know about the arguments around the translation, thanks) statement of contempt for those unfortunate enough not to enjoy his privileged feather-bedded lifestyle.
I could punch that prick in the throat quite happily.

Was it the boy Yuill who got the £250k from our stretched coffers, to help buy a church to become a community centre?Originally posted by 57vintage View PostIain Yuill’s cover has been blown. Martin Greig, that's the one I was thinking of.Originally posted by 57vintage View PostIt was both him and the other top Libdemmer (not a great boast, is it?) Martin Greig.
I'm sure the Cults, Woodside & Ferryhill buildings will bring in a tidy sum on the open market for the council to fritter away. Provided of course it is sold on the open market and not one of these dodgy deals that local councils specialise in and which always 'offer great value to the taxpayer'. Give it ten years and these authorities will have nothing to sell.
Feck knows what they will do with Northfield and Cornhill sites as they are part of community centres, possibly left to ruin as is usually the case in these parts. Will probably cost them as much keeping them shut as open.
Kaimhill, I have actually never been to and until the announcement never even knew had a library. Dyce is the only other Library in the city I have never been in. I'd better rectify that before it too gets shut.
I admire you for still having the determination to take an interest in these things. It just depresses me.
Thatcher must be rubbing her hands in glee down in her devils lair, when she see what she started 44 years ago being ably continued and bettered by every other political party in the UK.

Jeremy Corbyn banned from standing as a Labour candidate.
What a joke of a party they are.
There really is nothing between them and the tories now. Just a case of which party flicks the most crumbs from the table for us proles to get by on.
Thatcher will be loving looking up from deserved place inb hell and seeing her legacy being fulfilled.
