  • Sam Moore (89) Stax soul giant. Just about my favourite Stax act. He and partner Dave Prater never really got on, but were explosive as a duo. The secular gospel heart of Stax and Memphis. The recordings of the 67 European tour are soul gold.

He toured the UK frequently and was the star of the revue that played Aberdeen Music Hall a decade (?) ago with Geno Washington and Pauline Black.

    Another Proper Mannies? legend gone.

    Ach.

That was a blast from the past reading that name.

                    Just seen that.

When my mother in law was in Rosewell House (care home) a few years ago, Denis was a frequent visitor to see his Sister. She was also suffering from dementia at the time.
                    Always a gentleman.

My ma used to work with another of his Sisters in the fish, away back in the early 50s and knew Denis as a young loon.

                    • Garth Hudson, multi-instrumental genius of Canadian pioneers The Band. When they first went on tour with the affa radge Ronnie Hawkins as The Hawks, Garth?s ma and da were concerned that it would wreck his child prodigy instrumental prowess. This was solved by his excuse that he was giving the other Hawks musical tuition for a small daily fee. Hawkins himself told the boys, ?You may not make much money, but you?ll get more ***** than Sinatra?.

Then Bob Dylan came calling, Big Pink was established and the sepia-tinted songs just poured out.

RIP Mr Hudson, the last living member of one of the most influential acts of modern times.

                      Ach.

92 and looked younger now than when he played George Roper in the 70s.

                          RIP.

Him and Bruce Foxton were a superb rhythm section.

The Jam were definitely a group I would have liked to have seen back in the day.
