  • Jimmy Bone, gone at 75 - Used to play for St Mirren when I was a kid. I always remember him from my Panini sticker books.

I think the phrase 'well traveled' would apply to his career. Won two caps for Scotland too.

This was when he was assistant at County.
      Looked like Father Jack latterly.

      • In the excitement and drama of window closing day, we missed Joe Bugner - "the ugliest white thing I ever seen". Just 75

I'm not overly into boxing, but remember him fighting Bruno in the 80s and wondering who this fat old mannie was. My dad tried telling me he used to be someone.

When boxing had real characters eh! Maybe it still does - they all just look like flashy, narcissistic rich c**ts to me though

            Bugner was an odd one.
I'm sure there was a controversial fight against Henry Cooper, 60s mebbe early 70s, that led to antipathy towards him.
Went the distance with Ali (possibly twice? Need to look that up) and Frazier, then p1ssed off to Australia.

            • I seem to recall reading somewhere that folks didn't like Bugner after the Cooper fight because they loved Cooper and wanted him to win. Just became a bit of a hate figure and pantomime villain because he beat their favourite.

I might have read that about two other people, but rings a bell it was Bugner vs Cooper?

Exactly. Add on Bugner's "not-wholly-a-Brit" background and he was never considered to be British.

A good fighter who was rated by Ali, Frazier, and Angelo Dundee. He took both aforementiond pugilists all the way in his bouts with them.

Sibo's f*cked up and my under-used laptop seems to be the only way I can access this dying site. Neither mobile phone or i-Pad give me access. Meh.

                      Suicide allegedly. Not good.

Was a good boxer and came across as a decent enough bloke.

I saw his statue in Barnsley last week, and thought it was a fitting memorial to him. I assumed he had died years ago.

His last test match was 29 years ago. How is it that long!!!!!

He always pops into my head when I see any sort of 'Nelson' number.

Like you, I had assumed he was gone already. RIP Dickie

edit: Although that was David Shepherd and the one legged antics - still always picture it as Dickie Bird. I was young in the 80s
