The legislation effectively means that he was exempt from the lifetime pension savings limit of pension funds over £1.73 Million. A true philanthropist!Originally posted by Jupiter View PostThere is a whole act of parliament about his pension from when he was director of public prosecutions.

Whole Westminster bubble out of touch. Heard a Times journalist today saying that the solution was to up politicians pay so they weren’t ‘forced’ to accept these hand outs. Dearie me.Originally posted by Shetland Don View PostHe’s clearly entirely out of touch with reality and these actions demonstrate the prevailing culture that has become normal for many in contemporary politics. Why the f*** should he feel a sense of entitlement to free designer glasses, accommodation for his son and dresses (he claims are for his wife) on account solely of his position in politics, whilst the rest of us have to fund much more modestly prices versions of these things for ourselves!? He must also be a bit dim, which I didn’t expect.
Besides there’s not a salary big enough that would stop these people still accepting freebies.

The salary they earn isn't the thing anymore for most of them.Originally posted by Bojangles9 View PostBesides there’s not a salary big enough that would stop these people still accepting freebies.
They are mostly quite happy to slum it in the commons for a few years knowing that even a very small and brief ministerial role, will reward them afterwards when they step down/get kicked out.
We need to look more closely at the businesses and individuals donating to these parties and individual MPs in a big way.
You are not donating all this money/goods to parties and politicians for nothing in return.

No offence meant, but I have a habit of jotting down quotes from books as I plough through them, and noted this when listening to the audio book of Andrew O’Hagan’s Caledonian Road a few weeks back.Originally posted by Mason89 View PostThere’s a way out of all this you know.
Just saying like
“Just sayin’”
“What an odious, self-congratulatory little phrase”.

Starmer has been incredibly naive/dumb since coming into office.
I don't think anyone seriously expected his mob to be anything other than a cabal of free marketeer, morally bereft neo-cons like the last four**** years.
Any notion of a "proper" Labour party has long since sailed into the sunset, thanks to the electorate within Perfidious Albion.
But to get the basic optics so horrendously wrong, seeming to be going down the justification route of "well, it's nothing like as bad, or as much, as the last lot were troughing", is mind blowing.
The far right media are under orders to go on full blown attack.
How any politician could not see this coming is astonishing.

It’s fúcking ridiculous the way that Diet Labour (although it’s more starvation level), the Greens, the SNP, and anything bill-posted or self-identified with the meaningless, wan, harmless, scared-to-say-socialist “progressive” label are referred to as “hard left”, or “Marxist”, or “Communist”. Hop in the TARDIS with me and spend a 1977 evening with me in the Prince of Wales, Aberdeen (a boozer, not a royalist perversion), and I’ll show you “hard left Marxists” with the knowledge and muscle to persuade.Originally posted by TheDeeDon View PostWhere I work they are still deemed as the 'commie party'.
I sh*t you not.
Since 2017’s General Election, when I left a polling station with my head held high, the whole system, UK-wide, has evolved into the crock of steaming poop that it is. I’m an old man, and fundamentally, it’s going to get no better in my lifetime.
Ach.

Aye who would have foreseen their years of attacking the Tories for cronyism and abusing their privileges opening them up to the exact same scrutiny? FFS they know it’s worse for them as well being up against a majorly right wing press.Originally posted by InversneckieDob View PostStarmer has been incredibly naive/dumb since coming into office.

Like you I’m dumbfounded about the optics of well almost everything they’ve done so far.
They are not dumb but naive I feel is giving them too much credit. They just can’t help themselves.
And DeeDon makes a very good point - what’s this bugger Lord Alli getting out of it?
I despise the Tories but feck me we’re going to have to hope they get their house in order to hold this lot to account. Bloody hell can’t believe I’m writing that.

Judging by the quality of their leadership candidates, that isn’t happening any time soon.Originally posted by Bojangles9 View PostI despise the Tories but feck me we’re going to have to hope they get their house in order to hold this lot to account. Bloody hell can’t believe I’m writing that.
