For the right player its sometimes what a club needs Hope Shinnie has the desired effect. Im of an age I remember King Joey exit from Everton. We were involved in a bidding war wi Hibies the old EE used to have a blank space down the side of the broadsheet it was used for "stop press" I followed the Joey saga on that tension filled it was. Sadly Hibs outbid us was heartbreaking.Originally posted by pieandbovrilman View PostNever a fan of old players returning but I can definitely make an exception for the return of Shinniesta, welcome back min!

I was at some gig where he was holding court, and the victim of his tales was Tom Hart, chairman at Easter Road with whom Joe battled. The only gag I can remember was “Hart’s daughter came home one night and confessed, ‘Dad, I’m pregnant’. “Are you sure it’s yours?’”Originally posted by InversneckieDob View PostI recall The King coming back, arrived as part of the Ally MacLeod revolution.
The Hibs stuff.... Joe, to this day, detests Hibs.
Eoin Jess’s return was also a great success. But for his heroics, I think we might have been relegated. Imagine if he’d been about 5 years older, playing with the 84 squad????Last edited by 57vintage; 05-01-2023, 10:35 PM.

Mmmm Boothy could play, but he went back to sick-note-Scott plenty in round two.Originally posted by Jormungand View PostI recall that Scott Booth was also a class above when he returned, in the dark days. Here's hoping this works out - welcome back, Shinniesta min.
Eoin Jess, Jim Leighton, Joe Harper, Russell Anderson......all better comebacks.

Absolutely correct min, I'm probably just thinking o one game in particular where he looked like Cruijff reborn - funny how we remember certain examples which reinforce our opinions. But aye, Boothy would get injured.Originally posted by InversneckieDob View PostMmmm Boothy could play, but he went back to sick-note-Scott plenty in round two.

Eoin Jess at the bottom of the league & playing with shyte all around him, had an almost identical goals per game record as Brian Laudrup.Originally posted by 57vintage View PostEoin Jess’s return was also a great success. 113 (30) vs 116 (33)

Possibly, but he was also our best player by a fair margin in his one season back with us and finished top scorer in what was a fairly depressing season. 8 goals in 20 league games was a decent return considering how Shyte we were.Originally posted by InversneckieDob View PostMmmm Boothy could play, but he went back to sick-note-Scott plenty in round two.

You could see playing abroad had improved him as a player, but I do wonder playing in that team was the reason he retired.

Oh, Boothy was a player, nae doubt, and came back from his Euro travels mair accomplished.
I seem to recall chat that his perennial injury issues were down to one leg being shorter than the other.
In either Holland or Germany they made him specially adapted boots to combat this.
Nae idea if that's true or urban myth, but if true, we must've jettisoned the platform boot when he came back.

That would have been around the time of nae money and the toaster being taken away so would have been no money for specialist boots for Boothy.Originally posted by InversneckieDob View PostOh, Boothy was a player, nae doubt, and came back from his Euro travels mair accomplished.

My abiding moment of those times were Dundee fans waving cash at us, as that was when they were supposedly rich.
A surreal time footballing wise.

Signing Shinnie as a midfielder, if that’s the case, raises the spectre of the McInnes end of days when we had a team stuffed full of midfielders. Particularly with the other signing too.
Was kind of hoping he’d play left back, but that’s probably just a pipe dream. If he did, and McCrorie played RB, we’d be on our way to strengthening the defence considerably. But if not, that’s a lot of wages with no steps yet to improve our glaring weakness.
All that said, wherever he plays, Shinnie’s drive and character will be a welcome addition.

Well, he COULD play Left Back, and allow Coulson to push forward into midfield wide leftish.Originally posted by Don Julio View PostSigning Shinnie as a midfielder, if that’s the case, raises the spectre of the McInnes end of days when we had a team stuffed full of midfielders. I suppose.
But I just have this image of Shinnie rampaging around the middle of the park, upending folk, and pointing & oedering about the rest of both teams ?!!
