  • Romared Match Thoughts Barnsley v Burton Albion

On the face of it we should be looking at 3 relatively comfortable points but defensively we are short of numbers due to injury and suspension and we are at Oakwell where our form is dreadful .

However , new season , new HC and new beginings .

Let's make it two straight wins to start the season .

As Animal has said we have potential problems with our defence and with Burton having 5 ex reds in their ranks all wanting to prove a point I make this a very tricky fixture , however I think we may have two much going forward for them and I think we will just edge it but it will be no walk in the park .

We seem to be made of stronger stuff this season than we've seen for quite a while and that was a great comeback victory after a woeful first half display .

McGoldrick showing that you never lose that goalscoring instinct and was Jonny On The Spot for the winner .

Some of the old defensive frailties on display mind , Roberts is a huge loss and that needs addressing because better teams aren't going to let two goal leads slip .

Fantastic comeback. I wonder when the last time we came back from 2-0 down was.

First half was pretty awful. Reminded me of many homes games last season where we were moving the ball too slow and our defence looked like it had a mistake in it.

Then second half I thought we were much quicker on the ball and got our attacking players in better positions with the ball.

Phillips was named man of the match in the ground and his 2 assists were obviously key but McGoldrick would have been my choice. His touch, control and ability to link play is tremendous.

Just got home and I have to say what grit they showed to come back!
Having said that as long as Mael is pulling the shirt on we will never keep clean sheets, whenever he has time to think and pressure is put on him he's like a rabbit in headlights!
We have made 2 OUTSTANDING additions though Vickers and Cleary were superb today and look like proper talents.
Connell 1st half was awful and couldn't find a red shirt, I'm not convinced that Cooper is any good either, nearly gave a goal away at Plymouth and came rushing out with no chance of winning the ball for Burton's 2nd.
Hopefully the team will improve with Shepherd back and the new right back in place?

I said it could be tricky and thus it proved to be , the first half was woeful although I am not sure many refs would have given a spot kick so early in the game, which appeared in real time to be no more than a regular coming together that happens at every corner and the second was something out of keystone cops but were pedestrian in and out of possession and left ourselves a mountain to climb but we are a fit team and that was the key for me , we stepped it up and moved everything quicker , we scored a very good 1st and kept the pressure on to get a second and as Burton tired we kept going and low and behold a player who was deemed too old by some popped up in the 93rd minute with a winner , it was fitting for him as he was my MOM closely followed by Connel who was again ran his blood to water and I thought it was great of Connor to pull McGoldrick off with a minute to go for him to get the ovation he clearly deserved , everyone was stood and I thought it was a nice touch, we got the points and showed some fighting spirit , the defence once again showed us where our problems lie but hopefully we can get it sorted .

The thing is Shads we can't be having to score 3 goals every single game just to pick up the 3 points or even 1 point .

Football just doesn't work like that as we know , it's nice to have goals in the team of course it is and that doesn't look to be an issue , in fact we haven't struggled for goals since the last championship season if the truth be told .

Yet scoring goals is the hardest facet of the game and generally costs you the most money out of the budget .

Surely we can improve this area before the window closes because otherwise with the best will in the world it's going to keep us in this league for yet another season .

You are right Animal and if I may say there is no one who has banged the drum more than me regarding our defence needing investment, when Nudger was banging on about bringing in strikers I argued that there are goals in our team and that was not our main problem , keeping them out is our key issue, but I do actually see green shoots , I do believe we are defending better as a team, our shape and organisation is better and we are certainly providing better cover from our midfield, at Argyle we did it with 10 men and on saturday we got punished once for shocking defence play whilst I think the penalty was one of those things and incidentally if that was a penalty then there should be 10 penalties a match , pushing, shoving, grabbing and shirt pulling goes off at every set piece into the box but goes unpunished yet a mere coming together brought a penalty, unbelievable . I do think that a back four with two half decent full backs, Roberts and Shepherd will see us improve , if we could bring one more centre back and I think we would be ok, move the French man on and restrict Earl to a bit part and we will improve.
