  • Relegation worries.

After relinquishing a 2-1 lead in the final minutes and with both the Hammers on Saturday and Forest yesterday, relegation is looking more of a certainty than a probability.
Relegation this time around will be a financial disaster for the club.2 years ago we managed to accumulate over 90 million through the sales of our talented players to PL clubs and other top flight European clubs.Odabert , Berge, O?Shea, Weghorst, Muric, Vitinho, Al-Dakhil then subsequently a handy 10m or so for VK.
That is over 100 million.VK had an eye for a decent player despite all the duds he signed.
What are we going to get from a fire sale at the end of this season?
Which PL teams will be raiding our squad after the dire performances this season?
Edwards maybe.Humphreys maybe.Esteve maybe to a European club.He is not a good enough header of the ball to be wanted by a PL team. That really is the sum of our player assets. As for an offer coming in for Cardy??
Can we afford to keep the current starting eleven back in the Championship?
Some very difficult times ahead me thinks.

IF we can keep hold of the nucleus of a potential Championship winning team: Dubravka, Weiss, Humphreys, Tuanzebe, Roberts, Pires, Sonne, Cullen, Mejbri, Laurent, Anthony, Edwards, Banel, Agyei, Adewumi, Flemming, Larsen and Broja and sell Esteve, Ekdal, Florentino (sell him as soon as we buy him), Tchaouna, Hountondji, Amdouni, Ugochukwa, Foster, Benson, Ramsey, Tresor, I reckon we would have a greatly trimmed wage bill and come straight back up.

Whilst we can speculate, we don’t know for certain the financial state of the club and its ability to withstand another, certain, relegation.

What we do know is that the current owners do not have deep pockets. The stated objective was to make Burnley an established PL club after 5 years. That objective will not be met with the negative fiscal implications.

In the meantime, I agree with CiB’s observation - who in the current squad would attract big money in the transfer market? I suggest that over time, the quality of the squad has declined such that, now, there is no-one that I can see attracting any serious, big money, interest.

We should have potted Parker Weeks ago and given ourselves a Fighting chance.

It's to late now, were down.

We will of course have further chunks of parachute payments, and surely to goodness player sales such as Esteve, Ekdal, Florentino (sell him as soon as we pay for him), Tchaouna, Hountondji, Amdouni, Ugochukwa, Foster, Benson, Ramsey, Koleosho and Tresor will yield a return of somewhere around 120 million quid. No need to panic S_c.

I agree BT. I am not panicked. My point is that we can only speculate on the finances. What we do know is that, even with the parachute payments, relegation will have a negative impact that may require getting rid of what is a bloated squad.

If we are going to get out of the Championship again, we do need to hold onto as strong a squad as possible and not end up with a fire sale and a large turn over during the summer. We have some good Championship quality players, as we saw last season. They are simply not PL quality in the main. Certainly not helped by Parker’s tactics.

We should have done this or we should have done the other etc., etc.
Truth of the matter is that the new owners took over on 31 December 2020 and within 16 months had sacked a manager who had won promotion to the Premier League and, in spite of having very little to spend, had kept us there for a further four seasons, in fact, it could well have been continued in April 2022 because we won a number of games after his departure.

MOst fans were happy because they moaned about the football that we were playing etc., etc. However, since that date we have had two managers who have won promotion to the PL, one who was using us as a stepping stone and was lucky to get the Munich appointment for which we got a pay off, even though we had had a terrible season.

The other is Scott Parker who took over and managed to get us promoted with a squad that was not playing football that the fans wanted, however, he used the resources he had and won promtoion. I am sure that he will be as disappointed as anyone that things have not turned out as he would have wished, however, I doubt whether the club could afford to sack him or afford to find another manager for whatever they would offer.

The main thing about the last five years is that there are more questions than answers as far as I am concerned and who knows where we go from here.

BT, just saying as I see it. I am never pessimistic about football because it is only a game and it has no great efffect on anything in my life--I still waken up in the morning and I am happy and I still try to help people and remain positive in order to do that because there are some sad cases.
I was never happy with the takeover and the 5 year plan, whatever it was and nothing has changed that for me.

If/when we get relegated this season it will be the 9th relegation in my time watching the Clarets and I have also seen 9 promotions in the 73 seasons since my first game in August 1952. Certainly not something to worry about lol

I agree Sinky. They haven't exactly put themselves in the shop window this season except for Dubravka and he is too old for a good fee so we should hold on to him if possible.

Dubravka only signed a one year deal so he will be off in June.

I think that we have quite a few players signed last summer on 1 year deals, which will be to our advantage come next summer, when we come to reduce the wage bill

I don't see how we will ever build a team good enough to become an EPL regular when our plan is to sell what talent we do develop
or acquire as soon as their value approaches 15 million. An investment company has one aim, and we all know what that is.

Trouble is mnrht, ALK have bought a couple of real dead-weights and we need to recoup those losses first.
