  • VAR again

Just witnessed VAR chalk off a 3rd City goal at Anfield. Ball rolling towards an empty net. Haaland leading the chase. Szoboszlai pulls him back, Haaland has a tug back and the ball ends up in the net anyway. What do we get? Red card for Szobozlai and goal disallowed. VAR is killing the game.

The Laws of the Game were upheld correctly. Manchester City did not have a goal added to their goal difference and Liverpool will have a player correctly suspended for denying a goal scoring opportunity and this will benefit Liverpool's opponents when the one game suspension occurs. Had Haaland not pulled the Liverpool player to prevent him getting to the ball it is possible that the ball would have been cleared. VAR would then have been involved because there was a clear pull on Haaland but the referee played advantage but this was the first foul committed and considered to be DOGSO. All correct according to the Laws and VAR had no alternative than to intervene.

No VAR, you can bet that the goal would have stood, even though it would have been incorrect.

Under the circumstances surely no advantage was given to Haaland. A foul should have been awarded in the first instance,

We seem to be in a phase where almost all officials are playing advantage when, in many cases, there is no real advantage because,as in this case, there is only one attacking player in the vicinity. The correct decision, according to TLOG was arrived at, however, had advantage not been played there would have been no debate because it was a foul on Haaland and it was also DOGSO. Free kick to City and red card for Szoboszlai.

I wonder what the outcome would have been if the ball had gone the other side of the post instead of into the goal. Would VAR have got involved or not because a goal had not been scored.
