Trump's own aides barred him from the Situation Room during a rescue mission because he was having a meltdown. It’s time for the 25th Amendment.
An American fighter jet was shot down over Iran. Two airmen were missing behind enemy lines. A 24-hour rescue operation was underway. And the President of the United States was screaming at aides for hours in a nearly empty West Wing, so unhinged that his own team locked him out of the Situation Room and ran the crisis without him.
Reports indicate that Trump went into a "frenzied state" after learning the airmen were unaccounted for. His reaction wasn't concern for their safety.
It was panic about the politics. He kept invoking Jimmy Carter and the 1979 hostage crisis, telling aides: "If you look at what happened with Jimmy Carter... it cost them the election." Two Americans were behind enemy lines in Iran and the commander-in-chief was calculating midterm damage.
His "hours-long tirade" became such a hindrance that aides made the call: get him out of the room.
Vice President Vance, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Pentagon leadership, and intelligence officials ran the operation from the Situation Room. Trump got phone calls at "meaningful moments," which is White House speak for "we told him what we wanted him to know when we thought he could handle it."
The rescue nearly failed. Aircraft got stuck in desert sand. US forces scrambled to avoid Iranian detection. The airman was eventually pulled out alive. But it happened because the adults in the room decided the president was a bigger risk to the mission than the Iranian military.
The White House press secretary called Trump "a steady leader." Two people familiar with the episode called it a "freak-out." The Wall Street Journal, owned by Rupert Murdoch, published it. Not MSNBC. Not The Atlantic. Murdoch's paper.
This is the man with nuclear launch authority. The man who started a war without congressional approval. The man whose FBI Director passes out drunk behind locked doors. The man who posted himself as Jesus 46 minutes after attacking the Pope. The man whose own staff won't let him in the room when American lives are on the line.
85 Democrats have called for the 25th Amendment. His own former allies call him insane. And now we know his own aides physically removed him from a crisis because his behavior was too dangerous to the mission.
AND THIS CRANK HAS THE NUCLEAR WEAPON CODE.
