For me all the ‘stats and gubbins’ can be replaced by the notion that every now and again a single player comes along who makes a huge difference.
Good examples of this are, in no particular order, Igor Stimac, Dean Saunders, Leon Osman and, perhaps less obviously, Ian Taylor.
All transformative signings, at a time when there were fewer restrictions on the timing of new arrivals, who would become the missing piece of the jigsaw and/or provide much needed leadership.
I know Langas isn’t a new signing but he had that impact last season and his return, in October at the beginning of this run, reminded me of Stimac’s arrival all those years ago.
Suddenly we have a presence, someone who has the physicality along with the ability and intelligence to bring or pass the ball out of defence and you could almost sense the relief and feel the confidence spread amongst his team mates and the manager who has, since Langas’ return, also been much more able to confidently utilise proper wing backs.
