Cristiano Ronaldo will be able to play for Portugal in their opening World Cup game despite his red card against the Republic of Ireland.

Reckon they would have shown as much leniency for any other player? Maybe Messi or any US squad member maybe.

would be rather splendid and indeed ironic if he sustained serious injury in the first match of the world cup, which he could have avoided by taking his punishment like a man rather than the obnoxious **** he actually is

There's 2 Ronaldos IMO. There's the cheating, diving, crying, whinging, only there for the benefit of myself version on the pitch. I will never forget the game, Derby v Man U. 4 minutes extra time. Bottom of the League DCFC 1, top of the League Moan Yew 3. 3rd minute of injury time he drives into the box and finds his path blocked by a couple of Derby players. He turns 90 degrees right, pushes the ball forward, dives and dangles his left leg to make contact with a Rams defender. Dumbass ref gives the penalty. He's been conned right, left and centre. Of course, Ronnie takes the penalty and makes it 1-4. How often has he done that in and around the box during his career? He's a cheat. I don't like that version of Ronnie. (neither does Ammy)

There's also the one that doesn't anything like the publicity he should get. The kind, empathetic, kind, generius and charitable Ronnie. The one who donates, in no small amounts, to many a charity. The one who came across a young girl, badly in need of surgery the family couldn't afford. He bankrolled the operation which, IIRC, cost getting on 30 grand. He's done this on more than one occasion. I like that Ronnie.

Hard to praise someone for donating to charity when he's got a criminal conviction for millions in tax fraud.

Wasn't aware of the tax fraud. That shows he can be a cheat off field too. Still, coughing up nigh on 30 grand for someone he doesn't know, remains a creditable act plus he's done similar on other occasions. Maybe you can, occasionally and temporarily, polish a turd after all

Agree, after all Jimmy Saville did loads for charity.

Not suggesting he's in the same category as saville when it comes to wrong doings (although there is the incident where he paid hush money to a woman who accused him of rape to make the allegations go away)

He's not on his own of course with the tax fraud, messi did exactly the same.

Yep, 30k was generous, probably 20 minutes work for him. A bit like me putting a tenner into the Save the Children pot

Very easy to be altruistic when you’re that loaded. Question is whether there’s any such thing as…altruism.
