Idem ditto, amicis meis epularer.
This was the last new Year in which "Joe Public" may set fireworks off. From today it is banned. Reason? The mounting number of deaths and injuries from fireworks (Explosives actually, things like the Cobra range where the Cobra 20 can take the front off a house).
What happened last night? Lots of fireworks let off and very impressive it was. However, the downside of it is 2 dead from exploding fireworks (aged 17 and 38), hundreds of cars set alight, several houses and apartments went up in flame, police, fire and ambulance crews called out to incidents attacked by tw@s. In Amsterdam the Vondel Kerk went up in flames. Basically, exactly the things that have caused the ban in the first place.. except that there's more damage than ever.
Biggest fireworks sales ever, 129M euro so maybe it wasn't all for nothing

I think you should have to have a license to buy certain fireworks. You can buy big fireworks and set them off i a tiny garden, not only dangerous but traumatizing for animals too.Originally posted by Ram Pant View PostIdem ditto, amicis meis epularer.

Seriously though. We destroy our own freedoms. When I was a kid we had our own community bonfires and fireworks displays, all self policed by parents and - I’ll admit - occasionally accidents happened, but they didn’t involve the level of dangerous explosives that are around today.Last edited by ramAnag; 01-01-2026, 05:54 PM.

Best/Worst incident i recall is at Kilburn Junior School, someone thought keeping all the fireworks in a cardboard box was sensible, when pretty much the 1st one let off landed in the box it made for a spectacular if short fireworks display.Originally posted by ramAnag View PostLol!
