It has long been rumoured that the 4th Musketeer was killed in or around Maastricht whilst fighting for Louis XIV. He was killed on June 25, 1673, during the Siege of Maastricht, which was part of the Franco-Dutch War. He is also said to have been buried in Maastricht and, through the centuries, there have been many attempts to find his final resting place.
Thery now think they've found it. There was a slight floor collapse in a church in Maastricht and, when they were digging down to get past all the loose earth, they found a skeleton. They believe that the skeleton is that of Charles de Batz de Castelmore also known as d'Artagnan and later Count d'Artagnan. DNA tests are being carried out to either confirm or deny his identity.
