Never really seen the sense or the need but I’m genuinely astonished that they’re now talking of pulling the plug on something that has already had so much financial and logistical commitment made to it.
Suppose one thing it has in common with Brexit is that raises yet more questions about the competence of Government and the ‘motivation’ behind the original political/business driving forces behind it, in my - admittedly uninformed -opinion.Last edited by ramAnag; 21-08-2019, 06:35 PM.

Phase 2 is probably costed on the basis of EU money subsidising it in some way: which all of a sudden isn't going to be there, so bail out!! 😊
I've never understood why anyone would want to get to Birmingham a few minutes quicker, still less having the transit to places further north sped up.

Whilst on about white elephants. There has been non bigger than that by the labour government scrapping the TSR-2 in 1965. It was light years ahead of anything on the planet and could have made us a fortune. But Labour being labour scrapped it, leaving the door open for the yanks. All that money wasted on development.

Thought you maintained you used to be ‘Labour through and through’, Tricky.Originally posted by Trickytreesreds View PostWhilst on about white elephants. Anyway, imo, if they spent the money making existing journeys more pleasant and reliable they wouldn’t need HS2, but then I rarely travel by train.

I was Labour through and through. But not at the moment. My point was more in answer to your usual stance of blaming the current government.Originally posted by ramAnag View PostThought you maintained you used to be ‘Labour through and through’, Tricky.

Governments waste money, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
But we can agree on that point. The money should be spent on the current system. It's crap.

Isn't the London - Manchester time supposed to reduce from 2 hours to 1 hour on HS2? That's not a few minutes.Originally posted by Geoff Parkstone View PostPhase 2 is probably costed on the basis of EU money subsidising it in some way: which all of a sudden isn't going to be there, so bail out!!

What about HS2 being the basis of the Northern Powerhouse... or will all the money be spent on bloody Southerners again?

I think I'd heard the London Birmingham journey was 20 minutes quicker, maybe Manchester more. But my point us, what does it matter? Billions of pounds, environmental damage, destruction of woodlands so you can get somewhere a bit quicker. Bloody stupid when the rest of the network is strapped for cash. What are you going to do with those extra minutes, or even that hour? It's saving time for the ske of it.
Get to Euston quicker at vast cost then get stuck in congestion trying to get across London to your meeting and lose that time saved?
