  • I believe from observing rA's liking for plenty of holidays each year warmth and sunshine probably come back in March

    • So, Christmas, the time for peace and good will to all men (other genders are available) or just another excuse for over the top commercialism and self indulgence?

I'd say for 95% of us its a lot more the latter than the former, but given the tenor of the debate on here over the last 12 months over social equality, diversity, inclusiveness and so forth, I rather assume that at least two of us merry band of brothers will be inviting some homeless people or asylum seekers into our homes to share the joy of Christian celebration, good food, mulled wine and the kings speech?

For one, I most certainly will not, but it would be interesting to hear the perspective of the more liberal, caring members of this cross section of society.

Can't think who's going to win this, any guesses?
I fear you're right and that will then cause me to think long and hard as to whether I bother with the WC other than for ablutions.

Well if we are both thinking of the same winner, he's definitely full of ****

At first I thought you'd forgotten the F and then realised I was thinking of completely different acronyms

Tbf, I don’t think calling someone a ‘pillock’ - even me - is a hanging or bannable offence. Always a pity when insults, however tame, take over from reasoned argument, but not in the same league as false accusations such as ‘anti British’, ‘anti Semitic’ or ‘anti Christian’, all of which have been aimed at various posters in recent months.

Actually, GP commented this morning that I was ‘spot on’ about something. Now that is concerning.

I for one probably will, despite being derided by the usual suspects when I mentioned it (it being Christmas Day spent doling out grub to the homeless), I don?t recall the exact words but it was somewhat dismissive

I don’t know if I’m one of those two, GP, but no, like you I won’t, not least because I won’t be at home on Christmas Day, well not for the majority of it anyway and not for Christmas Dinner.
I’m not sure I quite follow your logic about being in favour of social equality and diversity equating to inviting people into my home, but we will be contributing relatively generously to Crisis at Christmas which you may, rightly or wrongly, regard as a bit of a cop out, but which probably achieves at least as much.

Recent publicity about Pakistani immigrants suggests that the G in GILF may need to be rereferenced as goat. Which would leave Wazzer slightly puzzled

It's similar to my wondering some time back as to how many pro Palestinian supporters would head to Gaza to aid in the rebuilding / distribution of food etc now that a form of uneasy peace exists. Very happy to talk the talk, far less willing to walk the walk. Same with giving aid to asylum seekers - talk the talk as long as it's state funds being given away, not their own. (Depending on their tax status of course).

Basically it's a society that shout a lot but do **** all about the issues they love to shout about. AKA hypocrites.

Hypocrites? Not really. The vast majority of us are tax payers and therefore have every right to voice an opinion on how state money should be spent. Likewise it would be hopelessly impractical for the majority who are pro Palestine to suddenly start rebuilding Gaza and handing out food parcels.
I acted in support of Mandela in the seventies but have never set foot in South Africa. Likewise I am opposed to all forms of racism and support gay/womens’ rights but I’m white, male and straight. Does that make me a hypocrite? I don’ think so, I’m just in favour of a fairer, more egalitarian society and opposed to all forms of bullying. All credit to those who house or feed the homeless at Christmas, and indeed throughout the year, but there are many other ways to help.
Don’t think you have a point.

                              • Indeed, just because you oppose racists storming asylum centres and threatening innocent people it doesn't mean you have to house those asylum seekers yourself.

Its actually quite a statement to suggest you can only be one way or the other.

I'm not even sure any of the more liberal posters on here are even comfortable with the level of immigration or the amount it costs.

As Alan Partridge might say 'I'm hopping mad and want something in the middle'.
