  • OT Play offs

The EFL are considering expanding the play offs to 6 teams with the positions 5-8 playing a one off game to get them through to the semi finals against position 3 and 4

Good idea? Will keep the season alive even more but just feels too much to me.

Finishing 8th, mid table ish, and being promoted just isn't right.

100% against it, a league's a league IMO, but its extra dosh so I guess it will happen

I'm surprised if they are thinking of it that the PL aren't looking at maybe including 3rd bottom as the 6th team. Anything to protect PL teams.

If it was down to 7th but 3rd auto qualified for the final id be open to it.

For me, the problem with Sith's suggestion and with the rumoured EFL proposal is that the teams finishing 3 and 4 (EFL) and 3 (Sith) would have a long break until their first playoff game and maybe go "off the boil" losing any momentum they had. The other sides would be still at full match speed.

There is the opposite point that any injured players might be fit during the gap, if they had any important players out injured.

Its all a lottery and IMHO even the prospect of a team finishing 6th in the Championship gaining access to the money league seems insane. Let alone 7th or 8th.... But there are teams in the so called "Champions League" who were nowhere close to being champions of their own dometic leagues (in one case the team finishing 17th last year, sneaking in at the expense of the one finishing 15th) But the TV money is great innit?

I'd be against it, but I'm against the concept of playoffs full stop. Its just another dance at the moneygoround ball. more fuel to the senseless spend spend spend philosophy of contemporary football. bring back baggy shorts and jumpers for goal posts

I think it’s just about right at the moment. It’s not entirely about money and we still have a system where by the Champions and Runners Up are, unequivocally what they’re said to be and are rewarded accordingly with automatic promotion.
The play offs, in one form or another, have been around for so long that it’s difficult to remember what it was like without them, but there must have been an awful lot of meaningless, going through the motions, matches.
So my view, for once the authorities have it about right. They’ve extended interest in the season for a number of clubs without allowing clubs who are really no more than upper mid table sides a route to promotion, so leave well alone.

I agree, the current system works well, wasn't for it at first but as has been said it retains interest at the end of the season and provides some extra excitement. if it ain't broke, don't fix it is my motto.
