Still not picking up players in midfield. Still giving players too much time and space around our box. Windass is just one example from yesterday. Free, on the edge of the box, very good shot, well parried by JWZ. Giving players like him the freedom of the park is asking for trouble. Fortunately, this time we didn't get trouble.
O'Brien was very, very lucky not to get red for that tackle. If we had VAR, he'd have gone. Totally different game from there on but the ref chickened out. To add insult to injury, it was the ex Red Dog who got their goal.
We might still be waiting for Aggy's first goal but he got his 2nd assist in 2 sub appearances and one start.
Ref? Missed the red, why didn't we get a penalty when Morris was pulled down. he let them get away with a lot of shirt pulling including twice in as many seconds on Aggy in their box. If he'd gone down on either occasion, every chance we'd have got a spot kick. Having said that, I'm against that sort of thing. The rule makers got it wrong when they removed causality from the Laws. It used to be that contact had to be sufficient to cause the opponent to fall. Now it's mere contact in a fall that gets penalised (unless it's us that go down
)... but not always, and that is the problem. Go back to contact having to CAUSE a fall and more players will stay on their feet. Forced Ebou off following treatment despite O'Brien having been given a yellow for the tackle that should have been red. H
Wide players get the ball and immediately look to play backwards. makes defending easy. IMO we got the draw because they failed to get a positive result from their good attacking play. We nicked a point.
I expect it to get better but it's going to take the players a few games yet to get used to one another. Preferred way of receiving the ball, the lines they run etc. We have the players but we don't yet have the team. That will come.
