The navy and coastguard regard the 'saving' of life as their first duty. Navy has ruled out any role in trying to stop the boats even to the point of defying the government. We should stop paying the French huge sums for doing nothing, come out of the ECHR, and immediately intern all of the young males in camps, Spartan affairs at best. No handouts, no free phones just enough food to keep them alive. Then do as Trump has done deport them and to hell with the consequences. As soon as they realise that they won't be in line for handouts for life they'll stop coming. Do I think Labour will go down this route, not a chance. Even the Tories for all their indignation now had their chance, blew it, and don't have the guts for it even if re-elected in four years. Even Reform for all their bluster now would likely fail if in government. I/we know the solution but we have no one to implement it. As for Starmer's one in one out that Is a joke, an insult to the intelligence of the people of Britain. He is from a party who once said they encouraged immigration to rub the noses of the British in multiculturalism; I reckon Starmer still believes this. I would have a fraction more respect for the clown if he actually admitted this instead of gaslighting the British public into thinking he wants to sort the problem.

Would the French benefit if they stopped the rubber boats by puncturing them as they take on board their passengers? Surely it takes time to inflate them, and that would allow an intervention.

The French don't want to stop the boats. They've done everything short of actively encouraging them. They have paid lip service to any agreement with the UK and abdicated all responsibility under the safe country obligations on them. It can be argued that they are acting in the interests of their country and its population something that successive UK governments have failed to do. We should ignore the ECHR and our own courts. The French have followed this course for years and it hasn't cost them anything other than some fines they likely haven't paid in any case.

You wud think all those engineers, doctors and astronauts wud be a net benefit to the country.....it's what we have been told since Blair's time.

ACH well easy mistake to make.

I was wondering if the French punctured the boats or set up some kind of prickly barrier the gangs would take their trade to say the Hull Zeebrugge crossing which isn't as easy! Might even stop the boats and stop the flow of migrants to Calais. By the way how many cross from North Africa to Italy or Greece?

Why on earth would the French make any effort to stop them? The French will be giving Argos vouchers to buy dinghies and a foot pump. The Irish which is an EU country send immigrants back that come from the UK so why can't we do the same to France?
