  • World Cup Club Compensation Payments

Read an article about how much a club receives for every day one of their players is involved at the World Cup finals. Payment is over ?8,000 per day per player from 10 days prior to the first game until the end of the group stage. After the group stage payments continue only for players of teams still in the competition. If a player is in the 26 man squad the club side would be paid c. ?225,000 even if eliminated at the group stage. If Luke had sneaked into the squad that would have netted a tidy sum and look at Rangers, Celtic and Hearts will pick up with the players they have in the squad a number of whom will never play. Luke getting in would have been a nice see bonus but I don't reckon any Dee supporter would have been counting on any possibility of it happening. Our deluded 'World Famous' neighbours, some of their support anyway, have been counting what they were going to get from Agyei getting into the Ghana squad and Naamo into the Iraq squad. Turns out neither made the final squads announced. One tube was going on about getting a windfall from the signing of their New Zealand forward who is a actually still contracted to a club down under until the end of June. In any case payments are made proportionately to the players clubs over the past two seasons. Just confirms what a funny lot they are.

On a serious note though it can be worth taking a punt on a player who could get into the squad of a smaller nation who squeezes into the next World Finals.

I'm no sure we are in a position to take a punt on anything.

I also think players can miss a lot of games flying round the world to play for Madagascar or whoever.

I hope we are gonna build a strong British squad but again reality beginning to kick in and this may well be a case of a long wait to get players in.

I also think it's very fanciful thinking that you can get to a stage where you are only turning over 2 or 3 players a season......even 4 or 5 looks wishful.
