Goodwin Out?

I've been on the fence about what is best thing to do with JG.
I've never been fully convinced by him from day one but last season was without doubt credit in the bank for him .
So even though this season has been a disappointment I've been undecided if sacking him was the correct thing to do or if it would have only made things worse so the lesser of 2 evils would have him remain and try sort thigs out .
I think now after watching that late collapse yesterday its pretty clear he needs to be replaced and preferably now .
We wont be dragged in to the bottom 2 spots so it would make sense to have a new man on board to give him as much time to prep for next season , the last thing you want is to have a scenario that you seen across the road with a new manager coming in and not having time to assemble a side , to prepare properly then needing months to get the team up to speed.
Worst case scenario he should go as soon as the season ends IMO.
The bottom line is that team crumble whenever any kind of questions are asked of them and it showed again yesterday.
That's HIS side , he's had plenty time to sort out the very obvious issues yet the minute any sort of sustained pressure was put on them yesterday they just buckled.
I thought the game was pretty evenly and finely balanced in that first half with the best chance falling to us and I'm sorry but that header HAS to hit the target .
Second half i felt we were by far the better side and once the first goal went in I felt there was only going to be one winner.
On the Pk itself I think the officials have done us a a bit of a favour there and had that been awarded against us I would have been absolutely fuming particularly given they were denied what looked like an absolute Stomwewaller in the first half ,so those 2 massive VAR calls have went our way .
That gives us the momentum in the game and once the 2nd goes in I think most of us are thinking its now a matter of by how many we win this by.
My first bit of doubt snuck in when Maynard-Brewer took a brain-fart and ran out his area needlessly, for me THAT was the moment things turned in the match. Even then though I couldn't have foreseen what was about to happen .
Even after they pull one back we still should be seeing that game out and its absolutely inexcusable that we didn't , terrible game management from the player and manager alike .
Ross had a good game but he has completely lost the plot in the dying moments that has cost us big time.
Firstly its a crude and needless challenge , complete lack of discipline at a time we need to just see it out that allows them the chance to put a last bit of pressure on our backline .
He's walking away laughing and joking and simply not switched on . I don't know if he felt the game was over but it most certainly wasn't and what on earth he's doing with that header I will never know.
The bottom line is if isn't Ross it would be someone else the next time , its a recurring theme that hasn't been addressed and that I'm afraid is down to the manager and coaching staff .
Its time for Jim to go .

We need a root and branch review of what has happened this season. This may not be as simple as changing manager. Are we just merely being used as some sort of system to try and get the owner some of his lost money back? Are we any closer to seeing the benefits of our academy stepping into the first team? What is the plan for next season, a change of direction or are we going to be going to look at flipping some foreign players to make some money? Why have we been allowed to stagnate rather than build on what we have? What does the manager see as the problem, is it the budget, is it the quality of the signings, is it inexperience? What do the players think is the problem, is it the coaching, is it the tactics, is it their teammates?
Maybe the root of the problem is with JG, maybe it lies with the players or maybe it lies with the way the club is run. My guess it is a mix of all these and I personally don't think that binning JG fixes the problem.
We are a club that would 100% benefit with a director of football, someone with experience that can be the buffer between the owner, the manager, the players and the fans. Someone that gets the club and the expectations of the fans. I am not convinced that our owner fully understands the running of a football team other than the balance sheet. I think the manager needs to be able to concentrate on the team without having to keep going cap in hand to the owner. I am not sure that the owner gets that sometimes you aren't going to get a return on some of your investments.

I don't think any of the hand balls were penalties, including ours. What happened yesterday at the end was criminal, especially after Easter road, and we had Killie in their too much he past month. Much worse yesterday as we were so far on top but failed to get a third. I thought we got a bit casual the last 5 mins.
I'd happy get rid of every one of our centre halves and keeper. That's where the manager has failed, with his recruitment and assembling of that defence which has no leaders and can't defend set plays. Would a new manager be able to organise them better and get a tune out them? Or are they just bad defenders. Probably the later tbh, though if you got a decent leader/organiser in there, and a commanding keeper, it might pull up some of the others.
Within the matchplay yesterday I don't think the manager did a huge amount wrong, surely on the players to see out a 2 goal lead with minutes to go, absolute non sensical to just kick the ball back straight back to your opponents front the kick off.
I think a lot of the fan base have turned to the point now where they just see everything through a Goodwin out lense so it doesn't matter what he does, even before the match yesterday as soon as team lines gets announced people are acting as though he has picked the worst team ever and left Messi and Ronaldo on the bench. When you get to that stage it's hard to turn round.
Probably 99% of us would sign up for season to end now. Manager prob would too, as he clearly wants to replace the personel, probably not creating a good atmosphere to go with that of the support.

Yeah, feels a bit rudderless under our ownership at the moment. Maybe as fans we need to be a bit more reasoned. When we are struggling we raise all these issues, rumours inevitably surface of a new owner, but the minute the team is doing well nobody questions the wider running of the club.Originally posted by weegiearab View PostWe need a root and branch review of what has happened this season. As negative as it sounds, I feel we go Into each season now in a 7 team league, where two of those slots are relegation. Not much room for error. Celtic, rangers, Hibs, hearts and Aberdeen are financially miles ahead, though can still mess up. That's not to say you shouldn't be aiming higher of course. But how do we get a model to consistently be pushing for top 6. Has any provincial club achieved that?
Motherwell and st Johnston have/had sustained runs in top flight, but been horrendous at times also, st mirren had a decent recent run up to now.
I honestly don't know what the answer is tbh other than having guys at your club who make good decisions.

likewise though maybe all this you say is looking too deep in to it and the simple fact is our defending is absolutely shambolic and the guy who signed these players , who's had all season to sort it and who coaches them day in day out and has failed to address it and therefore just isn't man for the job.
Time will tell

I’m more in the we need stability camp, because at the beginning of the season we were good; so something has changed either coaching, player skill and mentality or all of these thing to form a perfect storm.
As I have said on numerous occasions
1. Players certainly if you want a REAL attacking threat are played out of position i.e. FERRY, STRAIN, STEPHENSON are NOT truly attacking wingers. DOLCEK, TRAPS, FATAH ARE. The former need to be played in a formation that allows them to concentrate on their main purpose, DEFENCE and not totally bustin a gut to get back and forth, it will tell.
2. FFS give Dolcek a starting berth and then sub if needed, he can do no worse than what Watters or Farrugia have done in recent games, not very much imho. What has Dolcek done to deserve a benching every game; unless there is something going on behind closed doors. But he was excellent early doors and given a chance in the right position he can rediscover that form, it is likely he will be looking elsewhere for a new contract in any case. Shop window time for us or someone else.
3. Esselink isn’t a bad player either, yes slow but again in right formation does a solid job.
4. As it stands with all the loanees, end of contract we have to get a barrowload of players in and the process starts again, new team more excuses.
5. Svej should be Captain. RG prior to injury had a good season or two, but he is not captain material yet.
6. Assistant coaches have the bottle to question JG, if you think it’s not working, your job is to assist in getting the team tactics right and not just standing by watching it fall to pieces. If it creates angst then so be it, better to be truthful than blindly follow.
We did well yesterday and but for their GK then it would have been at least 4, but it wasn’t and we have to get off our backsides and go again; against a team that will show us no mercy. So front up as other teams do or take a doing!

The answer may well be that we need to get shot of JG though...I just think that it would be foolish to think that it will automatically fix the problems. I mean, at the start of the season he was patting himself on the back along with the recruitment team because we thought we had found a couple of cracking players...they have however, fallen off a cliff. I just think we need to be a bit more forensic in finding out why things have gone so wrong and why the mentality has changed as we had started the season looking pretty positive. That might be down to the owner, the way the club is run, the manager, the coaches, or a few bad apples in the team. Whatever is at the root of the problems, needs weeded out. I am not against emptying the lot of them if need be....we just don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water!

I definitely want to keep JG.
Season has been frustrating but not awful.
We outplayed Dundee yesterday but threw it away at the end
Experienced centre half and top goalkeeper needed
JG is good at recruitment. The players are always motivated and organised.
Be careful what you wish for as the last 10 years have seen some much worse seasons - in fact I think other than under Tam Courts and JG last season I am struggling to remember when we have been higher than 7th
Stability and continuity are important
I?m sure that JG has seen who is not up to it.
History shows he is ruthless in cutting off those he doesn?t think helps the club
This season has been blighted by unlucky decisions, Kuch punching balls in his own net and crazy individual errors like Sunday.
I?m looking forward to next season when I believe we will be well placed again with JG in charge
This is not just Shedka type optimism but I feel with bit of perspective we are ok and the club needs this stability to grow
Let?s not forget we out played a decent Fun side on Sunday - just the madness from players at the end that cost what would otherwise have been a good day

I genuinely must be watching a different Dundee United

I know it's a soft penalty but it's a penalty, he stops a pass going out wide for a cross from Ferry, we've had 2-3 soft pens against is in recent debits so maybe due one
The keeper isn't good enough unless as as a back up next season but maybe better than we had earlier in season overall
I don't think we should change manager either, he chose the correct liner up, for me it was pretty close to our strongest and its good to have most players available now which has been rare
Fans aren't always right, Goodwin is likeable and talks well, nearly always says it spot on when it comes to how games went, I'm not really sure why so many don't like it btw, find it bizarre to an extent given the overall job he's done
They seem fixated on it being a 3 at back issue but we just showed yesterday it isn't but funding an (apparently) much improved fun side
There is obviously an issue but it isn't the manager that falls on yesterday, he was capable of playing teams that seen out wins before, last season, so it's personnel, which can be addressed in summer, there is plenty to work with and can see improvements in a some of players , Iovu for one (missed a sitter first half yesterday right enough), think Agyei will be excellent next season if he avoids injury
I'm dead against ripping it up and starting again, three l the big risk is we go downhill, i prefer the stability route for now, I think that's best for the club and next season can see us improve on this one if we stick with it

I genuinely think many fans are overreacting to a disappointing but not disastrous second season
And thinks trend to spiral with social media, negatively grows faster and people lose sight of things a bit
This is just my opinion and I stand by it
It's been disappointing but it isn't THAT bad or as bad as people are making it
We should have more points but many factors have gone against us, drum Kuch's punching into his net twice to injuries etc etc, to yesterday where that performance deserved a win but the captain had an mega fk up

I'd give Goodwin the benefit of the doubt if he changed formation. In this moment of time he is to easily picked off. One thing that is clear is why not use the bench for like for like changes. Sevelj yesterday was good in midfield. Iovu gets taken off and Sevelj goes in the backline.
Of the centre-halves the ones I would keep would be SCH, Iovu & Dewar. Esselink obviously has had a fallout with Goodwin and not coming back from that. KK thinks he is good, I beg to differ, caught out flat footed a lot imo and rolls about a lot. Graham would be wise to get the better money if on offer elsewhere. Need a Andy Webster signing in the mix and potentially another one as well who is Scottish to make five centre-halves. Right back is Nammo and another. Left back with Ferry going leaves us with Farrugia and another.
Midfield would see Sevelj, Camara and Ayegi as your engine room. I'd add midfielders that can play wide right and wide left. Not as wingers but midfielders. I'd have Dolcek as a left winger and also off the striker or as the striker.
Up front I would say Sapsford worked well when he had the creativeness behind him and Dolcek as a foil. Picked out Watters in Vienna so could be used on the wing or through the middle. Watters imo was great before he ended up being crocked on the Killie pitch. Bringing him back before he was match fit has seen the crowd get on his back. Russell signing has seen him come back to some sort of form. Russell to me in all his three appearances so far has shown why the reserve league needs brought back. The experience he has and just the passes to Sapsford v St Mirren and Falkirk were sublime. The shot yesterday where he tested McCracken, wise head on these shoulders. He always plays with a smile on his face and he has a great work ethic.
Goalies need punted. Never seen so many goalies parry so many balls. Kuch was punching all the time. Why can we not get a Dykstra keeper wherein he is coming for 99% of the balls but might not get them all. Sign two keepers that can do that. When did Mathers become the goalie coach? What is Alexander up to these days? Has Combe got a new gig yet? I think Mathers is along the lines of Hinchcliffe.
Need players signed that are 30+ years of age next season, through the spine of the team. 343 yesterday worked until it didn't, we failed to pick up the three points again.
