Wow, you folks have all the answers so why all the angst opinions wise ?
As for free press which is the right of journalists & media outlets in reporting news & to express their opinions & then publish information without government censorship, intimidation, or legal interference with a watchdog for transparency accountability, all crucial for a functioning democracy then I do really take on board all opinions & obviously read lots of it too no matter what differences are heatedly opinionated on here.
Reporting certainly not an easy gaff to enter into specifically reporting politics of east & west, my younger brother dabbled within press & media that now operates globally which creates huge new challenges for the 'free press' reporting scenario due to the rise of AI-generated disinformation & increasing intense political pressure on journalists which are significant challenges for a free press today, for sure.
As for social media of Twitter, nuff said & certainly not for me, likewise Instagram bollux. Each to their own of course but within aspects of social media creative tec programming then mega bucks can be made for the tec savvy with balls & skills that defo pay the bills if implemented in the right direction today.
Ireland for example has experienced a massive, strategic & sustained rise as a global technology powerhouse with the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector employing more than 160,000 people. The sector has seen a 70 per cent growth over the past decade transforming the Irish economy into a leader in software, AI & digital services.
Their tempting tax regulations certainly encourage innovators, for sure. My young brother is now back in such media & regularly trades with Ireland from his German base as both countries have a deep, strategic & expanding technology partnership with 2025 seeing intensified collaboration in areas like green energy, AI, aerospace & high-tech manufacturing, a collaboration driven by trade missions from Enterprise Ireland IDA Ireland creating huge opportunities.
So not is all doom & gloom globally, imo, just shifts away from mainstay traditional employment & a willingness to uproot & travel.
Global employment is undergoing a major transformation driven by rapid AI adoption, aging demographics in developed economies & a shift toward hybrid, flexible, and gig-based work structures. While developed nations face labour shortages, emerging economies are managing expanding workforces prompting a focus on skill acquisition, particularly in green & technology sectors.
FWIW, the UK's technological communication sector faces significant challenges often characterized by patchy infrastructure, slow adoption of new technologies & a growing digital divide.

Not sure that the rise of AI is primarily or even largely responsible for the kind of shifts you mention in hybrid, flexible/agile working practices, at least not as an enabling technology, quite the reverse. It has certainly disrupted the working processes/practices adopted by humans, but not necessarily to their advantage. As you can perhaps tell, I'm not a fan. The greater our reliance on a technology that very few understand and no-one in any capacity has full control of, the less we can determine ANY outcome, never mind one that we would wish for.
We're already in the realms of robots capable of emulating realistic human movement when not so long ago we were watching robot "dogs" that struggled to remain upright despite having four legs, not two. Those "human-like" robots don't have our mental acuity or capability, yet. With the advent of a feasible Quantum Computing technological development, squeezing all we as humans have between our ears into a structure that could sit atop the shoulders of a robot that will be stronger, faster, less vulnerable and substantially more reliable is not so far away.
There's a line in Jurassic Park tgat I've quoted a few times, maybe here I can't remember...
The character played Jeff Goldblum, whilst touring the laboratory where dinosaur eggs were curated and new dinosaurs hatched opines;
"You scientists, you're so busy answering the question "Can we do this?", you never ask yourselves "Should we do this?"'

Back to the cause of my having started the thread......
Alex Pretti may well have been carrying an automatic pistol, but he WASN'T brandishing it when 7 ICE agents manhandled him to the floor, and video shows without a shadow of ANY doubt that he was filming, never having grasped the gun. He was shot, on the ground, representing no clear and present threat to anyone. Murder by federal agents.
Shame on anyone, and I mean ANYONE, who supports the administrations lying, self-serving and wholly unacceptable attitude towards the ICE activities.Comment

....... agree to some extent on comments regarding todays journalism as many do like simple stories that help us make sense of the world in a way thats not to challenging.......
........ so to some degree taking that position prevents us having to be introspective and to interrogate the question and answers offered.
........ far to often when reading historical and political stuff i'm thinking of what ways am i part of this patriarchal system........ which clearly can be seen throughout the whole total thread postings on here as it weaves along denoting systems of society or government always controlled by men.
......... its certainly not by chance through global history social systems that men seem to have had a privileged position in society is it.
........ most sociological theories offered with any clout always describe values and behaviour patterns that lets face it are predominantly offered after being shaped by men........ which only encourage a privileged position for men.
such predominance of men in positions of power throughout history is a complex and systemic phenomenon possibly due to a combination of historical biological and social factors that became attached over thousands of years of physical labour, property control to create settled life which restricted womens freedom and economic roles to ensure lineage...... sadly still doctrine of several countries today regarding cultural and social conditioning.
from my days of serious political studies and a hands on vocal activist many moons ago not much has changed....... but i have a voice at least..... on here anyway.

You obviously have an interesting mix of acedemic education along with exposure to the real world. Always find that fascinating.
I keep things much simpler.
- Journalists don't objectively report. Many moons ago I worked at a university in the Library and headed up the AV dept and was responsible for having audio visual equipment ready to go. In those old days of education that consisted of Film projectors or tape machines. I showed some films in the advanced Journalism classes. I can remember the extensive detail that journalists were supposed to do prior to even showing the editor their story much less actually have it published. None of today's "journalists" would have ever even be able to keep up with class material much less actually understand and pass the class.
The world has much less freedom now. It's something that many don't even know or seem to care. One day they will "wake up" and realize they are nothing but a serf and bloodbag for their rulers. It's too late at that point. As you know with freedom comes great responsibility.
We have many people in the world right now that have no concept of accountability or shame. It goes hand in hand with Freedom. If you aren't responsible for your actions or ashamed for boorish behavior you'll never understand the concept of freedom and going your own way in life
All of the above tie in to the loss of morality and a belief in something more important that just us. A belief in a higher power and controlling our own needs is the cornerstone of a free and civilized society. Man has corrupted most organized religions but at the end of the day believing in a higher power on a individual level can never be corrupted.Comment

the use of spin is prevalent in modern journalism ........ mainly for click bait for sure.
the media demand emotionally charged headlines pushing journalists to focus on framing rather than just reporting today...... and most politicians today now manage their narrative through spin doctors who provide biased interpretations of events to journalists.
an increase also today of politicians directly publishing their own narrative which bypasses traditional media and their owners who once only pushed their own political allegiance.....
this is basically just publishing propaganda wrapped up as spin essentially in my eyes.
....... they now require reporting today as 'forward spin' which only concentrates on interpretation rather than just reporting the known current facts........ days of objective reporting are long gone for all to see, all just spin now....... which is not a healthy concept one should concede to imo........

So the orange chimp in the White House has had its nose put out of joint as a result of the European powers he has been all too eager to criticise and berate not joining in the illegal "war" the US and Israel have waged against Iran. He accuses those who he failed to consult (and moreover accused of freeloadIng on US involvement in NATO), after mounting a military campaign against Iran, of failing to support such illegal military action.
Hegseth, that hugely accomplished ex-news anchor turned military expert, steps up to the podium and layers fresh accusations and insults on the ONLY group of nations capable of helping the US in ANY military action ANYWHERE in the globe, no-one else will (or can). The US CANNOT achieve anything on the global stage (short of a nuclear strike), without NATO partners. The Europeans and Canadians know that, perhaps someone should whisper in the ear of that orange blimp the truth of the matter.
The blimp and his entire entourage are a disgrace to the flag of the United States of America. Their time in office will be a stain on the memory of a nation which for nearly 250 years has been a byword for freedom, democracy and a shining beacons for the oppressed and discriminated. Shame on them all.
Btw, if I was King Charles, I'd tell the orange comb-over to shove his White House ballroom where the sun don't shine (but of course he will be too diplomatic to say what he really thinks)Comment

Oh and as a small aside relating to football....The World Cup.....OMG.... So Scots fans are.faced.with over $100 for train travel from the closest city to their first game (Haiti or Some other renowned team), or over $150 to park if travelling by car. And let's not forget prices for the final are up in the five-figure bracket. Land of the free huh?Comment
