  • I appreciate the feedback guys whether it's good or bad news. I aim to visit cities as they are places to see, famous names. But whilst travelling to them I would like to detour off to some more picturesque/beautiful places that are very different to just city life.
Any ideas would be appreciated and like I mentioned what's the best way to get around.

    • Never been there but the scenery on the beaches seems rather stunning. 🧐

Since your going to spend your times in the cities there are plenty of ways to get around cheaply rather than taxis ubers. Trains buses trams can take you anywhere.

Hi Oz. Sorry I wasn't clear about the travelling. I mean when I go from one city to another. Is hire car best or greyhound etc ? And what places I could visit between cities. I guess in the cities I'll see the obvious stuff but there must be loads more on or near the coast and in land when I travel between the big places.

Hire car of course. You will be starting in Sydney as that's where the main base is and international flights go there. The Continent is huge and takes a long time for what you want to do. If you want to go city to city domestic flying is the best but you will miss out on all the scenery which you would get just by driving. Like I said not much inland as most of the population resides near the coast up to 2 3 hours inland drive.
If you go to ayers rock for instance it's in the middle take you ages to drive there.
May I suggest when your coming say 3 months prior to go to a travel agency and they can plan it for you and you would get discount accommodation so on.

              The travellers dilemma, eh ?

No rewards without hardwork fact finding before hitting the well trodden paths or venturing on roads less travelled, for sure.

Gotta admit as a kid my parents encouraged travelling on lesser roads to destinations & subsequently I always choose similar now via camping & recently ditched my car for a converted van to feel the beauty of off grid breaks with my dog.

Love reading all John Steinbeck books who travelled extensively across America with his wife Elaine in a camper documenting his journey into his book Travels with Charley.
Also Steinbeck traveled to Europe & North Africa as a war correspondent during World War II & beautifully explained the virtues of off grid experiences & people he met on his journeys. Inspiring to raw travel & feel the elements not always on itinieries.

So many choices to indulge in travel wise, for sure, just gotta choose the standards you wanna observe is my opinion.
Just go for it, however you like it as its yours for the taking Sniffer via choice & courage.👍

On a continent like ours Totty it's impossible to see with a few weeks or even in a van type setting it's not doable. Only way to see a bit is by flying from here to there which takes most of your time up. I'm not negative on Australia it has beautiful places and things to see but it's the spreadness. If you go to a town once you seen one you have seen australian towns as they are all similar.
According to The World Factbook, Australia has the sixth longest coastline in the world, at 25,760 kilometres (16,010 mi). So een if you want to do just the cities by car you can do the maths how long it will take.

Yes driving from Capital to Capital isn't a great option mate. I think it once took me 20 hours just to get from Brisbane to Sydney! Overnight buses are a reasonable option if you are a decent sleeper...but most people seem to fly from one to the other. Then just hire a car to get you to tourist sites within an hour or so of the City. Like the Gold and Sunshine Coasts are to Brisbane. Then flying or train trip up to Cairns or Whitsundays in North Qld is a possibility depending on time available.
Plenty of good places to see in both Sydney and Melbourne. Like going to both...but prefer not to live there full time!..haha.
And there are plenty of English living in Perth these days. Probably because it was the quickest to get to from over your way. And because it takes about 6 hours to fly across Australia from some locations, finishing your trip in Perth may not be a bad option nowadays. Will make your trip home a bit shorter which helps! I'm sure one of the Airlines now have direct flights from Perth to London. Just something to keep in mind....

Yes, Oz (both of them) are right. If you want to see a lot of Australia, its not a good idea to drive. OzLeeds is also right that most Australian cities are very similar. Visiting Australia is not about seeing sights, its about Australian weather, beer, cricket the beach, and the barrier reef. And the beach. Americans I met on my travels liked a place called Cooperpeddy and Alice Springs if you are a little more adventurous. If you want to get a taste of the most beautiful weather in the world, go to Perth. One day beautiful, next day perfect.

Yeah I'm all good champ. Seeing the skin surgeon every 3 months is keeping me a step ahead of things. I guess you could say I've been riding my luck over the last few years...lol. Put it simply, I have now had 10 different melanomas removed that have made it to stage 2...but none further than that. One was touch and go to stage 3, but removing a servicing lymp node under my armpit proved negative to having spread further. Basically getting a lot of things removed these days as a precautionary measure only...simply because of my past record, and the surgeon doesn't want to take any chances of missing one. Used to the hospital procedures now!...haha.
So from personal experience, I guess I can use this moment to tell all you big tough men out there...and lovely ladies!.....if you have something that looks odd, please get it seen to. Don't pretend it won't happen to you, or go away. Some people just don't get 2nd chances. We all have plenty of Leeds trauma to go through yet!

                        • Thanks for the info everyone. I think more research is required on my part, which is an enjoyable part of planning.
I now know I'll only rent a car for shorter trips to places I want to see as the country is too vast otherwise.
I'll also consider Perth as a place to see and check flights in and out of there to Manchester airport.
Internal flights look inevitable although I'll check the trains too. Overnight bus rides probably not.
There's probably too many potential places to visit that I'll just have to pick a few and build them into the trip.
A sporting event would be something else I'd look for. I like all sports so there's bound to be something to see.
                          Much appreciated. Thanks everyone

                            Sorry to hear mate.
So much of it going around one minute you're ok next your not. This little town has lost so many in the 3 years i have been here. If I'm not mistaken we are talking about skin cancer right? Ozzies take the weather for granted even though we all know the dangers. My friend here just had some taken out but his not well and just yesterday I seen him walking around in the sun without a hat and scars all over his head. I told him off and his excuse was I don't like wearing hats!
Good luck with your battle hope good comes out of it and wear a fkn long sleeve cotton shirts and a hat you donkey ozzie hehe.
Thats a nother danger for you Sniff the weather here even in winter up north it's still hot.

No I'm doing fine. General health is okay otherwise. Just glad the kids are better educated with hats and wearing sunscreen these days. Played football for about 25 years, and can't recall ever using sunscreen before a game! Silly in our weather in hindsight. I cover up now, but damage already done. Mind you, some of my problems are sun caused, and other are mole related....through skin and hereditary reasons. So it doesn't have to be our hotter weather....wink, wink to all you Pommies!...haha.

Sniffer - Melbourne is a quality city to visit if you get the chance and has some great cocktail bars, coffee cafes and great food - if that is your thing. Its also got more and more whisky distilleries popping up all over the place.
