  • Welsh recalled

    Not the news we wanted.

"Celtic have recalled centre-back Stephen Welsh from his loan at Motherwell.

The Hoops had until January 14 to decide whether to recall the 25-year-old, but it was looking unlikely under former boss Wilfried Nancy.

However, it?s understood Martin O?Neill believes Celtic need cover for Auston Trusty and Liam Scales, with the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers not due back until around April.

Welsh has impressed on his loan spell at Motherwell this season and has been subject of an enquiry on Friday from another Scottish Premiership club.

Celtic have been willing to listen to offers for Welsh but, as things stands, feel he is needed in the squad for the time being. "

A bit of me wonders if Celtic are being smart alecs by recalling Welsh now as it must have thrown a spanner in the works for our recruitment this window. With him away, Balmer away and McGhee still to prove his fitness can stand up to playing in games as opposed to training sessions, we are now left to decide if some of our, presumably limited, funds need to be spent on another centre back as opposed to a striker and left back cover which I think would have been greater priorities. We now need to think if we stick or twist - do we sit and cross our fingers until late in the window to see if Welsh is allowed to return or do we now have to go after a replacement for him?

Think there is a specific date that any rearranged loan deal has to be completed by, I think the date is well before the transfer window closes. If that is the case we should know a bit in advance of the window closing what we will require to do in transfer business

Hope you are right, TC, and that it’s at least a week before the window closes.
