  • PIF's Al-Hilal

PIF owned Al-Hilal are advancing on a sale to a new private owner, taking the club away from PIF's control, according to Ben Jacobs.

He says that the idea with Al-Hilal was only ever meant to stabilise the club, with a structured exit plan for when the right investor emerged - which looks like has happened!

Al-Hilal are the closest PIF-owned club to a new owner. Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli are all on the same long-term trajectory, but nothing is imminent in terms of a change of owner.

Newcastle United is different and a long term acquisition for PIF

    Interesting to see this.

If they do start moving away from the Saudi owned clubs.

Or will they keep one in the stable of clubs they are clearly aiming for in a multi-club grouping.

The Saudi Pro league is partially centrally funded by the government. PiF directly owns the 4 clubs mentioned above. However, the rest of the clubs owned by Sheikhs are partially financed by government money as the entire league makes big losses.

If the central funding wasn't available Saudi wouldn't have a professional football league. PiF's full acquisition of the 4 clubs was part of the development play to make the league profitable. As a side it's also part of the ground work to tick certain boxes to facilitate their World Cup Final bid.

Part of Ronaldo's contract is that he either get's his own Saudi League team or he gets to own or a part share in Al-Nassr Club.

What they are looking to achieve is to have a long term, genuine high quality football competition in the Kingdom with a view to inspiring the rest of the Region, UAE, Qatar etc to invest more and improve the regional game. Promoting fitness, healthy sporting pursuits and looking to generate subsidiary revenues from 3rd party associated businesses to the sport.

The potential sale of Al Hilal is not a surprise to me, it will no doubt be seen as a very exciting commodity for a wealth Sheikh or a Wealth Saudi Family Office looking to diversify their portfolio and curry favour with MBS and the current ruling council.

Furthermore the will be regional interest from Allies to the Kingdom wanting to improve their profile in the nation and again scoring brownie points with his Excellency's council & PiF.
