  • Kieran Maguire - Jan Spending

"They are in a really strong position. They made a huge profit on Isak, they have got the benefit of Champions League money. Newcastle could drop ?200m across this window and the next window and still be well within the limits.

💰 "Even if they sign a defender for ?30m-?40m in January, they would only have six months of amortisation to throw into the equation. So a ?40m defender on a five-year contract for six months only works out at a ?4m cost, plus his wages, but they have got nothing to worry about.

👌 "They get ?2m just for one victory in the Champions League so they are in Position A when it comes to recruiting."
Kieran Maguire on how much Newcastle could spend in January 👍
    ------

If this is all true and I've no reason to doubt, that bodes well at least for us.

what was the net spend? Something like 6 signings cost 220m quid - 130m quid for Isak + 20m for Kelly (dunno if he was before the cut off and was on last seasons PSR) However, I think the New spend was around 90m quid.

90m / 5 year contract (amortisation) = 18m net spend in year 1. Operational cost etc absorbed v the revenues means there's money in the pot.

However, the focus is really on a big summer with so many contracts ending and fringe players just not good enough.

That being said it means that transfers planned for summer will be attempted to be signed this month. The challenges around that are higher prices to get deals done, to encourage mid season moves.

The opportunity cost of signing the players now are:

      Opportunity:

Players in early can learn the system as the season goes on
Pressure is taken off the key first teamers
Spread the load, reduces the chances risk of injuries due to fatigue
Enables the team to rotate, potentially picking up the points needed to requalify for the UCL next season
UCL money 2 yrs in a row, softens the blow of higher transfer costs this month
Potential to go deeper in the FA cup, UCL whilst maintaining the top 4/5 tilt

      Cost:
      Over spend on players
Incoming players not having a pre-season to assimilate with the team
Reduces the transfer budget for a very significant summer rebuild to replace lots of players out of contract

I'm glad I'm not Ross Wilson!

      Good luck to him

Agreed but he seems to be pretty switched on - more so than the ast 2 anyway.

Actually feels like he wants to be here long term, way he is looking at all aspects.

I don't miss an episode of 'The price of Football'. I download every episode to listen to on flights or in the gym etc.

Kevin Day's pretty much for a commie palace fan lol
