It is not Newcastles fault Liverpool cannot afford him.

They have spent what? 300m this window. They had the money, they put it elsewhere rather than use it to sign the guy they promised was their No1 target.

I think the Guehi transfer hinges hugely on the Isak dynamic for Liverpool. They want both this window. I think we should have offered the 45 mill to force Liverpools hand to pay up for Isak. Even if we weren't serious about it.

I also think it’s probably the right thing to do, as long as we get the most possible out of Liverpool and Isak hands in a transfer request.

We already have to pay Sociedad 10% of any profit made, so not sure how it works but if we’re to accept £100m cash (and not even bothered it if it all up front as if it is spread over 2 seasons then it shows up in PSR rolling 3 years longer, which is better for us) and Harvey Elliot, so around £140m in total value, then that could mean we minimise what we pay Sociedad (10% of 100-63) but not sure if we’d get away with it and have to pay 10% of what Elliot is worth… then maybe we just push for £150m over 3 seasons… and have a £50m boost to numbers for the next 3 years.

We don’t pay for players up front, so it doesn’t impact us in material way, and makes it more likely Liverpool pay full value for Isak if they are spreading the cost.

Truth is, while Isak is being a bit of a cu^t in how he’s going about it, Liverpool are more setup to challenge for titles and Champions League than we are, so if we take off the black and white specs it’s an understandable want from him (in terms of his career, with him not being local) BUT if we spend the money wisely it helps us kick on and as long as we can get 2 strikers (which I think is the possible sticking point) then our squad is stronger as a whole… we can’t replace Isak with like-for-like, but if we have depth in that position, which we didn’t have all last season, it should help balance out the impact.

I’m trying to be as fair as I can, and playing devils advocate which I do a lot, but as things stand I want the cu^t gone, restore the feel good at the club… Ramsdale, Thiaw, Ramsey, Elanga have all been very good buys, if we bring in at least 1 quality striker, probably Wissa even though I dislike what he is doing at Brentford and would prefer someone else, and another (as Wissa will be off to AFCON for a month) then this will have been an amazing window, and we’ll have money to go again next summer, and do similar, or even in Jan if the need is there and there are players available that will be a good fit.

I’ve had enough of Isak, I commented a few times in the last couple of months of last season that he didn’t look at the races, so if he was poor for us then, he’d be even worse if we keep him… and that’s more damaging overall… line in the sand and we move on.

As for Liverpool being able to afford him, their net spend is less than 100m, so they can probably afford to sign Isak for 150 and still buy Guéhi, so they have the money… but let’s focus on what we have achieved so far and if the sale of Isak means we have the funds to keep up the momentum and cement ourselves firmly in the Top 6 this season and be ready to push on next summer in the transfer market then so be it.

No one player is forever, it’s the club that persists, getting rid of Isak, making a ton of money and improving with that money is the most important thing.

Talk of Isak sitting in the reserves for 3 years is bombastic nonsense, and hurts us at least much as him, if not more because we’d have this kind of nonsense every summer and it would be a downer on the squad and make the club look stupid.
