He wasn't bulked up and needed a season or two. If we are going to do this, we need to set up some kind of nursery team in the national league now so we can send them on loan, get them experience and bulked up and ready for the first team/saleOriginally posted by kill_the_drum View PostI?d completely missed Ed Francis is now at Exeter and a regular in the starting 11.
I always felt there was a player in there but just never really established himself for us.
Look at Colby Bishop, we released him and a couple of years later, he's playing Championship football

Accrington deserve a lot of credit for taking a punt on Colby Bishop in 2019 after he’d spent three years in the NLN. As for “a couple of years”, it took him eight years to get to the Championship after we released him.Originally posted by Chicken Balti Pie View PostHe wasn't bulked up and needed a season or two. I’m also not sure how many clubs at our level would have had the patience/resources to stick with a player for three more years before he came good. Fair play to Colby for the excellent career’s he’s had - but he’s definitely the exception rather than the rule.

We released him when he was 19. He'd been on the fringes of the first team. We're happy to sign 21 year old academy graduates and have them on the periphery. The academy is only going to work if we hold on to them until they're in their early to mid 20sOriginally posted by nw6pie View PostAccrington deserve a lot of credit for taking a punt on Colby Bishop in 2019 after he’d spent three years in the NLN. Can we afford to do that, though? I’d argue that the academy is only going to work if we’re able to attract a better quality of youngster from the start of the process, then train them in “the Notts County way” of playing. Along the way we’ll lose the best ones to Premier League sides, but that might help pay for the academy.Originally posted by Chicken Balti Pie View PostWe released him when he was 19. The bottom line is that we’ve never had a reputation for being a club that produces players (with the odd exception over the decades), so it’s going to take a major commitment to try to turn that around.
