It's the 'girlfriend who dumped you for someone better' syndrome.

You thought she was beautiful at the time, but you've convinced yourself she was nothing special after she dumped you.

    • Wrong there Elite. I never thought she was beautiful she was bang average but had a lot of slap on.

LW took over after we had already had three years in the NL; three failed playoff campaigns and never really got anywhere near automatic promotion. It?s revising history massively to say it was an easy league to get of.

When LW arrived, we had lost two of our best players in Wootton and Roberts too. The team the team lady could have got promoted:

Slocombe - the keeper throughout our time in the NL.

Defence - Brindley, Rawlinson, Cameron, Baldwin - all bar Baldwin had also been there throughout other failed promotion campaigns. Club stalwarts but hardly players way above NL.

Wing backs - Nemane and Chicksen. Chicksen hit double figures - he had never had a season like that before or since. Maybe something to do with the manager encouraging him to get in the box? Nemane ended up being the best RWB in the league but was barely used the season before under Burchnall and never from memory trusted in that position.

Midfield - Palmer and Bostock. Palmer undoubtedly an excellent player pre injury but another who had been in our team when we weren?t promoted under previous manager/s. Bostock ended up being a crucial signing but again was carefully managed and took a while to get up to speed. He has just been transfer listed by Solihull Moors.

Attacking midfield - Rodrigues, Austin, Scott. Rodrigues was the one player clearly above the level when LW arrived but again illustrates the importance of a good manager. Under Ardley he either played on the wing or not at all, there were times when he was out of the squad altogether in his first season here. Austin and Scott played their part but are they really players way above that league?

Striker - Langstaff - Two incredible seasons here but he credits LW with turning him from a winger into a number 9. He wasn?t a readymade star in the same way many of those who Wrexham signed were. Had we signed him under Maynard he?d have probably played him LWB and everyone would have moaned about ?cheap? recruitment.

I get some people cannot understand why anyone would ever leave this club and take some turning around after that, but terms of his record in 18 months I don?t really see how we could ask for much more. We had lost a few games in L2 but were still in the playoffs when he left after two massive home wins - look at what Maynard did with the same squad in the second half of that season - the defence and keeper/s clearly weren?t fit for purpose.

I for one would love to see what he could do with a proper goalkeeper and defence to work with in this league.

          • Well if we are considering having LW back i wouldn't mind Burchnall back !! but with the time scales involved so far i cant see it being an ex manager because all the due diligence stuff would be irrelevant. I'm expecting (and now hoping) the Dane manager. It was possibly a done deal, but an announcement can't take place out of respect to the team. That scenario would make sense to me.

It?s making more sense to me as I said earlier for those exact reasons. I honestly thought we would announce last week but now I think there?s a reason more than a problem. Looking at his CV I definitely think we could get him, Bros may already know him, read an interview and he?s keen on possession football (433) and developing players. Could be wrong though 😂

Burchnall recently said he loved his time at Notts... Maybe a number 2 to Williams Although Williams would probably cone with Harley again. Stranger things have happened at the Lane though

The Dane sounds like the one and I'd be surprised if it wasn't him. Bit of a gamble but hey.

                  • What if H?jer was appointed Head Coach and Luke Williams came in as his assistant? He?s previously gone on record stating that he?d be willing to be an assistant. Could be part of restructuring of the ?football department? the bros have alluded to?? 🤔

Good post. He turned that team into something special. Who else could transform Chicksen from a defensive-minded full-back into a high-scoring wing-back?

I'd love to see what he could do with Will Jarvis or even Mai Traore. I'd love to see Jodi playing with the breaks off again.

                        Good post.
I?ve leaned slightly away from wanting Williams back but this has me at 50/50.
History has certainly been rewritten where LW is concerned. I can?t remember a single person happy when he left, just a few bitter comments in the days after.
My main concern would be he adopts the exact same style and tries to turn Matty Platt into Pirlo.

That is just not going to happen for a few reasons LW will believe he should be top dog at L2 level.

Next point no new coach is going to want a popular ex manager as sidekick as a few bad results will lead fans to demand LW is installed.

When LW says he'd be a number 2 he is more likely saying that about a premier league or top end championship club.

He will still be being paid from Swansea so he can relax and wait for the right job for him.

                            • Interesting if accurate;

For me, I feel the way we ended the season is more to do with Maynard, than this apparent slide Williams had us on.

                              Williams had 26 games that season - Pld 26 W 13 D 3 L 10 F 55 A 47 GD +8 Pts 42

                              Maynard had the remaining 19 games - Pld 19 W 5 D 3 L 11 F 20 A 34 GD -14 Pts 18

Would Williams, averaging 1.61 points, have finished worse than Maynard who averaged 0.94 points with the same side?

We were definitely win/lose/win/lose under Williams, but to have us up in 5th with basically a National League squad, he did better than even Maynard averaged in his Playoff season 1.56 ppg, with a stronger defence.

Stronger defence weaker attack by a mile too worth being balanced.

What we need is someone with a proven EFL record who isnt on the merry go round.

Step forward Ian Evatt a guy who has led two clubs to promotion.

The way our model works the head coach takes ALL the blame for somebody elses signings.

Maynard had us in a good place to be fair then we sold one of our best players and replaced him with someone we released 4 months later....now ask yourself who made that decision.
