  • Two trialiists - offers on the table

Both Yearwood and Benson have been offered contracts but by no means have they been accepted yet.

Is this a worry or is it just protracted contractual 'from you to me... me to you ' talks?

What always concerns me with trialists is they manage to be injury free for the length of the trial then once they have the contract in the back pocket they end up on the treatment table.
I hope those contracts are based more on appearances giving them incentive to not become sicknotes

I like the look of Benson, but Yearwood showed nowt at Harrogate and looked a yard off the pace. Let's hope they both come good.

Sooner get one signing Vaulks or Rathbone quality than 2 trialists.

Would assume it?s all down to money on offer.
If the salary of ?5.1k / week at Barnsley was correct then accepting less might be a sticking point. Don?t know anyone in the prime earning years would be happy taking a drop.

The fact that Rotherham have released this information to the press suggests to me that the players are unlikely to take what has been offered. Ive not seen either of them play, so I dont know if they are any good but this seems like we are offering peanuts.

They are no doubt hanging on for a better offer elsewhere.
Trialists are free agents for a reason. Usually poor injury records or they have ran their contracts down thinking they are worth better than the clubs they have left (we have seen that happen to us plenty of times)
It's a fine balance. Players risk getting nothing if they are too greedy and clubs risk paying over the odds for a player who might turn into a crock.
I'm guessing players won't like contracts based on appearances and that might be what they have offered. It's a cut throat business this football

I have absolutely no experience of negotiating with footballers and their agents and I have often defended PD on here simply for that reason. However, putting offers on the table for what are essentially 'damaged goods' and leaving them there for any period of time reeks of poor negotiation skills. We should make our first offer also our best and final offer, make sure they are aware of that, give them 24h to sign and if they don't, move on.

Spot on, we can't afford to wait til the last minute being held to ransom while they make their minds up.

Have to agree cam. Even better get PD and the player/agent sat down. Put the lowball offer on the table, wait for agent to give his counter offer. Hit him with. Right I'm going for a coffee. This is the final offer (10-20% higher). Let me know when I get back. If it's a no, thanks for your time. (Now fk off).

I'm going to disagree. I don't think threats work with anyone, let alone footballers. You make an offer based on your judgement of their value to the squad and leave it on the assumption that they'll fish around for something better. Meanwhile you look at other options.

An offer isn't a promise of a job.

Sounds like Yearwood didn't impress the fans that saw him play so why not, if he's not that good, retract his offer and offer to pay that tad more to Benson to incentivise him to sign?

Another problem associated with offers that have no expiry date. You end up having to retract them if you change your mind. Putting a time limit on them focuses the minds on both sides of the deal.

Well the season starts in 15 days so does that put the pressure on anyone, player or club?

Still 6 weeks of the window so no rush though I wouldn't go e them the option. It doesn't take 6 weeks to make your mind up if the club fits or not.

If the player is comfortable and the wage offered is descent then it's a yes or no. I hate this. "Well I will talk to other clubs and if they don't offer more I will be back".
Imagine Doris being offered Yorkshire tea and as much hot water as she needs then her saying.
I'm off to Costa and see if they offer Pg tips. If not hasta la vista (continental Doris)
