  • OT Christmas dinner.

I?m giving up with turkey this year. If it was as nice as chicken then we would eat it all the time. It?s not.
I ordered a Capon from Andrew?s in town and at ?50 I?m hoping it?s good.
I?ve since read that caponizing cockerels is actually illegal in the UK.
So no idea what to expect when I pick it up on Xmas eve.

Caponizing is illegal in the UK but selling them isn?t. So your capon is likely to be a European import

so available capons are usually imported or are slow-grown, high-welfare cockerels sold as "capon-style" for a richer taste, perfect for Christmas. We sold hundreds of Capons in the butchers I worked for in the sixties it was legal then. I could be like Grist say?s from France.

Best bird ( except for our lass ) I have had
was capon, mate reared them in his allotment,
what made the meat so good was he fed
                    them on barley.
I am doing Christmas Dinner this year, due to
my better half not in full health.
I am doing a Turkey crown, pork & beef for 6 up to now.

The capon was delicious. Very tasty and moist. Leftovers went in a curry on Boxing Day and 2 chicken, gammon, leek and cheese pies.

Glad you enjoyed the Capon, I would never get anything else at Christmas.Have a look round in September for a good frozen one the price should be a lot cheaper.
