  • O/T Snooker - Masters amazing bet

To get down to the last four, eight games took place.

The outcome was unbelievable as all eight games finished 6-2! Had you put a single pound coin bet on that
happening, the odds were a staggering 92 MILLION to 1.

Never been achieved before in all its history.

Do you know of any other amazing odds that were achieved in sport?

The 'odds' being quoted vary wildly from around 20,000/1 to somewhere into the millions. The likelihood of a bookie offering over 500,000/1 on any accumulator isn't high, many bookies cap out at that level to stop weird bets killing them.

The probability of it happening is different, and would seemingly be no higher than around 1.7m/1 (assuming the frame count of the losing player is anchored to chance). Freak set of results, news agencies trying to out-do each other on the numbers.

Botham's 500/1 comeback in 1981 and Douglas beating Tyson (reported at 42/1) stand out. My personal highlight was backing England to win the Ashes in 2005, in an acca with Somerset (Twenty20), Es*** (one day league, I think), and Hampshire to take the C&G... what I remember vividly was my Ladbrokes betslip at 1008/1. The fifth day of the final test was nervy, the weekend after was very messy.

I understand your point on why bookies wouldn't cover those odds. The actual quote was given by the presenter on TV in the studio.

Great story on your amazing bet, that took some doing. As for you mentioning the Tyson/Douglas bet, 42/1 was the actual price. I know this because in my 'man cave' on the wall is a prized authenticated signed 21x 25 photo of douglas stood over Tyson sprawled on the canvas.

To be precise, February 11th 1990 was when it took place in the Tokyo dome. Douglas had four losses already and was considered nothing but a moth for Tyson to swat away. One reporter, going through Japanese customs, announced he was in town for business.
When asked how long he would be working, he laughed and responded. ''Oh , about a minute'' The fight lasted much longer than that though.

My biggest sporting bet wins have been in the hundreds, unlike your thousand pounds. Each weekend I place a one pound bet in each of the four leagues for all teams to score. I've only done that once about 5 years ago when all championship clubs scored at least one each and that returned ?625. The next big wins, well they were for me, were when Anthony Joshua fought Andy Ruiz Jr.

I backed Ruiz to knock Joshua down in the 3rd, and the 7th and to win the fight. All that happened and I picked up a little over ?700 pounds for that. I don't back big money as betting can be a mugs game.

In 12 years I've only had odd bets on the Cheltenham festival. Went on form so put it this way I couldn't get excited putting 1 pound bets on. Virtually packed up cause I'd retired from work & something had to go that was it. Lotto my only regular punt now. Got my plan I'm staying with it got to be in it to win it!

Betting is a crazy world. One bloke once backed Jordan Hugill to score 10 (or was it 15) goals in a season. I think he was taken away by men in white coats
