  • RIP Brian Sawyer

Saddened to hear Brian Sawyer has passed away at 87. A very classy centre forward who scored in our 1960 FA Cup Third round fixture against Arsenal where we saw victory after two replays.

I believe he was the last living player who saw action in our legendary campaign to the final of the first League Cup in 1961 though he didn't play in the final itself due to injury.

    RIP indeed.

Just been reading up about him. An all rounder as they say in sports. Very unlucky not to make the League Cup final having been in all the other rounds.

Another Rawmarsh lad, they certainly know how to turn them out.

      Very sad news indeed.

I was taught by his wife at Monkwood Infants School (1967-68) and in fact was at school with their only daughter for 14 years at Monkwood I&J and Mexborough GS. I think we are even sat side by side in our 1976 prefect's photo. They lived in Willow Avenue backing onto Rawmarsh Welfare FC and as a teenager my money collecting job at the local newsagents took me to their house every Saturday morning where I met Brian on numerous occasions. Contrary to today's popular image of footballers, Brian and family were broadsheet readers.

As an 11 year old I also remember the excitement in 1971 when we drew Frickley in the FA Cup where Brian was playing at the time. They held us 2-2 at their place and we won the replay 4-0 just 3 days later.

      RIP

Remember him well, mobile, ever reliable, always gave 100%. Helped set me on the road to becoming a lifelong Miller. RIP Brian.
