  • Salford pre-match thoughts...

There's plenty for MH to think about in terms of our approach to this game, both in terms of the system we play and the personnel within it.

I'm assuming McGuckin will start, probably alongside Hugill if we're sticking to the same system. And where is Josh Ayres, is he not an option?

I think he'll stick with wing backs tomorrow, rightly or wrongly. I just can't see him changing it, but we'll see.

Wing backs to me are a no no ? quite simply we have not got the personal to play this system ? To me wing backs are ok if you have two, we haven’t even got one ? The midfield is the key to this system, if you win the midfield battle you can feed the ball behind their wing backs, if they play with them ? If you lose the midfield they feed the ball behind ours which immediately puts you under pressure because the wide centre backs have to pull wide to try and stop the ball been knocked in !!

Well I am watching it Turkey with four Salford fans so should be interesting. We have to start with a 4 and pack midfield for me

Watching on sky sports + need 3 in midfield even it means playing wide players narrow. Same I'd go with a back 4. Want to see what McGuckin can do starting.

MH is clearly worried about the depth of the squad we have and he must demand that he is allowed to bring in strikers and a central defender before our next match.

Might be a good thing Etete being injured cause we needed better. Should speed up now getting that.

Can we win? Not on your Aunt Nelly. Salford's defence will be tough to break down. Another tight game? Nope. We'll be lucky to score more than one goal. Salford will have a field day scoring two maybe three goals. They know how to control and play the ball to feet, unlike us who seem unable to string more than three passes together.
Really hope we can win but head thinks otherwise.

There is no debate. We don’t have wing backs and we don’t have a team, yet, capable of working with wing backs. MH is trying to put square pegs in round holes…..TBH, I did not see all of this coming. I thought he had more sense.

I recall the appointment of MH accompanied such phrases as, I quote, giving Matt the tools…..seems we haven’t yet stopped using the old ones. Furthermore, contemplating using them inappropriately.

I recall fans saying give him time. We can?t keep sacking managers we need a reset in our approach. Yet 2 games in and the knives are out
I?ll be there tonight supporting my club.

Your correct pocket. The manager merry-go-round needs to stop though if Hamshaw doesn't get on top of this team he's putting together he won't be here long enough to build the team.

IMO sacking a managers mid season has always been pointless and imo whatever happens hamshaw should be our manager in may 2026..
                          Then it's time to judge.

It will be a tough game. The Salford fans that I have spoken to over the last few days, say it is all long ball and the ball is permanently in the air, they also say they are very physical, a typical Robinson team. The squad is light and that is what you get when 20% of your signings have very poor availability records, that doesn?t include new contract to JJ who is permanently injured. I think there are some potentially good signings but some were high risk and very likely to be a waste of a wage when the budget has been reduced. We will do well to come through this round.

Trouble is you need 2 up front & 3 in midfield so ideally that's with wing backs. McWilliams & Yearwood put in the engine room in midfield with Powell on the left. Hall right wing back. Need someone stronger than James on the left if fit go with Kaleta there. Hughill McGuckin up front. Rafferty on right of a back 3. Lenny central. Raggett or Jools left.
