I think it's certain regardless of staying up or going down, he won't need to ask anyway, we'll be wanting a fee with only a year left on his contract.

Whether we stay up somehow and the club cashes him out to retain a bit for incomers, or if he goes because L2 is clearly too low for him at this age, he leaves. He's not local, he's going to have options, the club won't offer a worthwhile extension to make him want to stay, I see no scenario where he wants more time here.
