0/T The Brecks pub/restaurant now closing down

Been informed today the Brecks is due to permanently close due to insufficient passing trade to make it pay.

Being a Beefeater public house, in a very good position with a large car park, you would have thought it had enough passing trade to serve it well. The sign of the times I suppose and what with affluent Wickersley being just up the road with all it's eateries, this is what happens in trying to make a public house/restaurant work. Have to say never found the food there appealing.

Not sure of the official closing date but you have to feel for the staff. Also not sure how this will effect the Premier Inn situated at the side of it.

You hear stories of 60-80 pubs a month closing up and down the country but never thought The Brecks would have been one of them.

No sympathy for any of these places. If Wetherspoon can manage to sell ale at half their price they should take heed.

Wrinkly, thanks for the info pal. Tigerish makes a good point though of pure greed of overly inflated prices by Whitbread when Sir Tim Martin can run a multi chain of Weatherspoons making profit and his punters are happy enough to rerurn repeatedly.

You can look across many goods sold where retailers are way over pricing. I bulk buy from Costco saving many pounds off my annual shopping bill. As an example, take Actimel. Asda's for a pack of 8 is 4 pounds. I buy a twin pack of 10 in each for 5.97 and Costco are making a profit off that so, why are Asda's so high? I could go on but like I said, that's only one example....greed greed greed.

Well - I had a 40% off voucher yesterday. So my bill was reasonable

Sad to hear this. The Brecks pub, and the Premier Inn joined to it, have been my go-to base when I visit Rotherham. My family have probably been drinking there, off and on, more or less since it opened in the mid 1930s. (I lived about a quarter of a mile away as a kid.)

Feels like the end of an era

The intention is to make many of the restaurants into additional hotel residence as I understand it (Premier), there’s 3800 jobs across the business but they are hoping to re employ many of these
For my part I went there in February with the family and I can honestly say it was one of the worst meals I have ever had, shocking service and overpriced

A lot of people buying alcohol / spirits from
the supermarket, & stopping at home, far cheaper.
Personally I can't drink alcohol at home, unless I am outside gardening etc.
I have a whisky (large) every night in the house.
When government stopped people smoking in pubs this started the footfall going down in pubs.
Some people can only have a drink on a weekend, like brother-in-law who's job is driving, so he normally has a blow out on a Saturday,
especially match days.

They are looking at expanding the Premier Inn, so there is plenty of trade. Might be they keep part of the restaurant for hotel breakfast and evening meals?

Other pubs nearby closing include the King William at Oldcotes. Went there for lunch a couple of months ago during the week, they had lunch time specials which were small but a good price.

Feels like the end of an era

This is where me and the fam stay as well CT whenver we come up to visit family. Hotel is just round corner from my bro's house so hope at least the hotel stays there as very conveniant for family gatherings. Not very fussed about the pub - called down for one when up there at Easter but was shocked that weak beers (Madri as good as it gets!) cost over £6! Not surprised no one goes in there!

...and the beer in our village(Greasboro) goes up 5% next week, that'll make Moretti and Cruzcampo very near ?6ish.

Don?t know how the crown in greasbrough stays open , used to be my local years ago , too many pubs in the village. People?s drinking habits have changed over the years and cheaper alcohol in supermarkets haven?t helped.

Many people meet up in other places with friends and relatives. Public houses are fast becoming a thing of the past because the appetite for them has almost dried up. Consuming alcohol used to be the done thing when out with your mates or at a family do. People have become more health conscious these days and lots of pubs and clubs are suffering as a result.

Yes all the Beefeater and Brewers Fayre pubs are being closed/ sold/ converted into more hotel rooms.

No surprise in the current climate, the government seems to be at war with the hospitality industry.
