Not really sure of my logic. After first guess I had the vowel (and had ruled out two other vowels) and thought the answer was more than likely going to be a single vowel word but the prospects were endless. 2nd guess ruled out the remaining 2 vowels and 3 other popular consonants. 3rd guess was the only word I could see although I'm sure it probably wasn't.

Interesting evolution. Clearly the eliminated consonants - and the fact you were pretty certain it was a single vowel word (and you had the vowel in the right place) - were key.
