  • Some brilliantly descriptive golfing reports there, lads and well done Ronners, Raging, Howdy and CAM for birdying a hole that the others found challenging!

I managed to par it with a 4 but really tested my short game with a long uphill putt from the edge of the green which I studied for ages.

            • Teed off stinking of booze after a heavy weekend. Slashed violently with my bat (never played golf) and fluked 2 g and 1 y with my first serve. Left with a challenging long put, quite a challenge when shaking like a dog, but converted the puck for a mighty two. Second ever, and second in a week.

In club house on snakebite and feeling much more rounded now. Women excluded so nice and peaceful. Cheers.

                  • Monday 14th.

Looking at the long fairway I hit a good tee shot with a 3y.

I know it felt good and drove on well moving onto 4y and managed to land on the edge of the green, this is where I came unstuck.

''This is it'', I thought. A nice putt but it was a sloping green and I shot past the hole still on 4y.

I knew it was an uphill putt and thought, ''I've got this''......damn I lipped it with 3g and 1y.

                    Finally I dropped it in for a 5, 1 over par = +1. Total after 3 holes = +3.

                    • Air shot on the tee. Composed myself with a decent but unspectacular 2nd then out of the blue holed a 7 iron from 170yds. One under par after 3 holes.

                      • Well, Raging's amazing Eagle has put him at the top of the Leaderboard after 3 holes. Playing drunk obviously suits him - but he really should not be retiring to the clubhouse so early in the tournament. Back out there, Raging. Take your hip-flask with you if you need sustenance...

Nicely played birdies from Howdy and CAM. CAM's looked a bit flukey; Howdy - very much the pro. Bogies from 3 of us (I was faffing around on the edge of the fairway for too long. Could not move the ball forward to save my life.) The rest were pars.

I'll publish a snapshot look at the Leaderboard tomorrow. See how we're shaping up after four holes...

Mine does look a bit flukey but TBH the one green I had was the first letter and having already ruled out the 3 vowels that weren't in the eventual word and other common consonants there weren't many options left. I only came up with 2 at the time and having thought about it longer I can't come up with any more. It's interesting that for the 2nd time recently they used a word very similar (4 letters and same starting letter) to one they used only a few days ago.

I’ve sensed that we’ve seen some letter replication recently so your comment supports that. Not sure if it’s the puzzle setters getting sloppy or they’re running a bit low on easily accessible 5 letter words.

My comment about it being flukey related more to your very descriptive golfing analogy! I’m really enjoying how creatively people are writing these short monologues every day.

Are you planning a music quiz or two for the World Cup break?

I even thought it was flukey and that's why I described it that way and it was only when I went back and reconsidered that I realised there were so few options open to me. Not often you can hit a 7 iron 170 yards and have a 50/50 chance of it going in

This message from NYT might explain 'changes', it's been handed over to the editorial team.

The day we announced the acquisition of Wordle, I received dozens of texts congratulating me, as if I had personally done it. (Like, Mamá, please stop telling people your daughter bought Wordle! Love you!) Unbeknown to all these well-wishers, the truth was that the acquisition was the start of a monthslong itch. We acquired it. It was playable. But the editorial team couldn’t actually touch it, though we longed to, until the content management system was built.

The successful integration of the game is a feat of strength by a team of designers, product managers and engineers, the unsung heroes of games. Without them, our work would be mere words on a page.

It’s our turn now. As of Monday, my team has full control over Wordle. I’ve assigned Tracy Bennett, one of our puzzle editors, to curate and program Wordle every day. Tracy is a strong crossword constructor and editor, and she is known in the crossword community for her work on the Inkubator, a site devoted to mentoring and publishing the work of women and nonbinary constructors. Wordle is in capable hands.

                              Game on, Wordlers

Funny you should ask about music quizzes. Putting a one off up tomorrow with a slightly different angle. After that might do some more Who Am I Quizzes for a change.

                              • Bogey 5 today (15th Nov)

Unspectacular drive to start (1y), and got up near the green, but not on it, on my 2nd shot (2g+1y) I could think of at least 3 words it could be, so bunkered myself as I burnt my 3rd shot to try and give myself a better chance of a par.
Turns out it was non of the 3 words I could think of 😫 (still 2g+1y) but on my 4th shot, with the letters I had left to use, i could only think of one more word it could be, and it wasn't that either😂 but it gave me another letter in it's proper place plus a different one (3g+1y) so my shot out of the bunker left me a 6 incher (if only said my wife &#128521 and I completed for a bogey 5.

                                1y
                                2g+1y
                                2g+1y
                                3g+1y
                                5g
