  • O/T RIP David Wilkie

Sad to hear today of the death of David Wilkie at the relatively young age of 70. Only seems like yesterday that he was at the forefront of British Swimming/Athletics when Gold Medal Winners from our home countries were few and far between. A true Olympian from the days when you had to fit training in around trying to earn a living.

    RIP David

Also had my photo taken with him. It was either at school or visiting Rotherham Metro Swimming Club. I’m guessing that would have also been circa 1982.

Bumping as I find this a great story. It would be an amazing feat if his son can achieve what he's aiming to do. At the age of 33 and a non-competitive swimmer trying to beat his Dad's record from 50 years ago when he was a competitive swimmer and only 22 years old. About as tough as challenges get and all for a good cause as well as his own personal reasons.

Remember staying up really late as a school kid to watch him win that Gold Medal at the Montreal Olympics .

It was a really big deal in those days because we didn't win much at the Olympics , certainly nothing like Team GB today .

I remember myself and my mates were all straight to Barnsley Baths the next day such was the impression it left on us .

RIP David , a real superstar of his day .
