You might define him as a journeyman. For me he has been one of the best of what I would call classic centre forwards in my lifetime following the Millers. His hold up play, strength and pure resilience was sublime.Originally posted by Stovicmiller View PostHe?s been a journeyman footballer so has to look for whatever he thinks is best for himself and his family. Good luck to him .

David Gwyther was a good player and to be fair your comparison is valid. Once saw him score a hat trick in a 4-4 draw at Swansea in the late seventies so I remember him well.Originally posted by Lolmorgan View PostAre you forgetting Dave Gwyther,Nards ,Apologies if you are not that old.
He was a crowd favourite at Swansea where he made his name, and was top scorer for 4 seasons. At that time Swansea were hovering between the third & fourth divisions, whereas Smith had played at level 2 twice with the Millers and also Sheffield Wednesday and now with Preston.
He is certainly the nearest comparison to Smith to have played at Rotherham. Gwyther scored 45 goals in 162 appearances for the Millers whereas Smith scored 52 goals in 188 appearances in his time at NYS.
Career wise Gwyther played a total of 598 league games scoring 159 league goals - a ratio of a goal every 3.75 games whereas Smith currently has scored 133 goals in 532 games - a ratio of a goal every 4 games so not a lot in it but Smith has scored 18 goals in the Championship & a further 12 for Sheff Wed making 30 in total out of 161 combined Championship games, with more to follow at PNE.
Given the level of playing & the teams played for and against, I would put Smith ahead of Gwyther.

And to think he couldn't get a game for Bury when we signed himOriginally posted by Nardendee View PostYou might define him as a journeyman. Absolutely not. He was a great servant to us and a shame he left. Like you say, he did best for his family and himself like any man would do.Originally posted by Tigerish View PostHe's a good player. We rescued him. He paid us back. He wanted the best for his family. Preston will benefit.
Does anyone disagree with any of this?
