  • Would We Have Won the First Division Title if it weren't for the Snow?

That flippin snowy weather hit us hard in 1979 when matches all around us on Boxing Day were postponed. This game against Bristol City at home which was one of only 3 games that survived that day. We won 3-1 with orange boots. All these postponed games over the new year period disrupted our momentum with Liverpool winning the title. If it wasn't for the weather i reckon we would have been division one champions as it turned out we finished 3rd.

The snow didn?t help but everybody had to deal with it. I think the turning point came earlier than that when we played Liverpool at home. We were absolutely walloping them and Cunningham had put us up 1-0. Then Godden dropped the ball to his feet to dribble to edge of the area (as all goalies used to do then) and didnt notice that Dalgleish was lurking, and all of a sudden it was 1-1. I think that did our heads in. Had we won that game, as we deserved, we would have won the league. But we didn?t and I think we lost the belief that we could win- that somehow Liverpool was always going to find a way to get the better of us. When we later played Liverpool at Anfield we hardly put up a fight even though a win would have put us back in contention.

I think with a better manager than Big run ,this team would have won the cup and the league .

He cost the semi final v Ipswich , Ron took the players to Wembley in the lead up to the game and got them to go up the steps .
Bobby Robson ,said he didn't have to do a team talk he should them the photo .

Agreed that was massive blunder by Big Ron.

I WUZ THERE at that Bristol City game. We wore orange astroturf boots which were perfect for the pitch. I remember Bristol had to retake the penalty because Ally Brown chucked a snowball at the ball

Liverpool had a great side but the Albion had the greatest team ever assembled in our lifetime but because of the postponements we had to play catch up due to our fixture pile up. We went top of the table that day on Boxing Day and as not been repeated since

Liverpool had undersoil heating, which enabled them to keep momentum .

Loved the ground when it looked like that, standing in the woodman corner (albeit at a slightly higher cost).

Remember the Bristol game well, with those boots we seemed to glide over the snowy surface while the Bristol players looked like Bamby on Ice. Also was at the game with the Godden incident. Despite that error, I always rated him.

Should we have won the league that season? I am not sure but I do not think that the postponements helped our cause.

We might have won it if Liverpool hadn't got an all time record number of points!
